Third-Year Clerkship

The Obstetrics & Gynecology clerkship is a six-week clinical experience that includes inpatient and outpatient care opportunities. There are two clerkship sites: Prentice Women’s Hospital and John H. Stroger Jr., Hospital of Cook County. Students complete rotations on the obstetrics service and one of the gynecologic surgery services.

Students will follow and deliver patients on the Labor and Delivery service as part of the day team as well as on the night float portion of the rotation. All students will take at least one 10-hour weekend call on Labor and Delivery during the rotation. The inpatient gynecology rotation offers students an opportunity to scrub on surgical cases, care for post-operative patients, see consultations with their teama nd attend morning teaching rounds. Students will also spend time in a variety of outpatient clinics to gain a greater understanding of subspecialty care.

Faculty and residents provide supervision and mentorship, culminating in an evaluation of each student’s clinical skills and general knowledge of the specialty. At the end of the rotation, students should demonstrate:

  • An understanding of the fundamental concepts relating to basic reproductive and gynecologic issues, including common complications, diagnosis and treatment of such conditions (surgical and non-surgical options)
  • Proficient  clinical skills to perform pelvic examinations and cervical cancer screening, as well as evaluation of pregnant women during their prenatal care
  • Clinical participation in vaginal and cesarean deliveries
