Research

While the center currently does not have resources to sponsor pilot or ongoing research programs, such programs are a long-term goal. Center members are among the best-funded investigators in any discipline in Feinberg School of Medicine. Examples of their highly productive research programs follow:

  • Patricia G. Spear, PhD, and her colleagues have succeeded in identifying receptors on eucaryotic cells for Herpes simplex virus
  • Syamal K. Datta, MD, and his staff are recognized for research on systemic lupus erythematosis that defines T helper cell determinants on histone proteins and attempts to regulate the disease by targeting the CD40/CD40L pathway
  • Stephen D. Miller, PhD, and his staff have been recognized for their work on pathogenesis and regulation of T cell-mediated autoimmune diseases, particularly for defining the pathologic role of epitope spreading in chronic autoimmune and virus-induced demyelinating diseases and the role of B7:CD28/CTLA-4 costimulatory molecules in progression of autoimmune diseases
  • Noel P. Bouck, PhD, has been recognized for her research on tumor suppressor genes and angiogenesis
  • Robert A. Lamb, PhD, a Howard Hughes Investigator, has been recognized for his work on the molecular biology of influenza virus

Several collaborative relationships exist between the center and other departments, centers, and schools including the following examples:
