Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

The Department offers a fully accredited two-year residency program in child and adolescent psychiatry. Based at Children's Memorial Hospital, the program includes rotations at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and school and community programs. Four first-year positions are filled each year through the National Resident Matching Program child and adolescent psychiatry match. The director of education in child and adolescent psychiatry is MaryBeth Lake, MD.

Program Overview

All residents spend the first year entirely at Children’s Memorial Hospital (CMH) in block rotations on the child and adolescent psychiatry inpatient unit, the child psychiatry partial hospitalization program, and the pediatric consultation-liaison service. In addition, the residents begin their longitudinal outpatient clinic work and gain experience in emergency psychiatry with on-call duty, which is supervised by faculty members.

The second year of training includes subspecialty outpatient child psychiatry clinics: Psychopharmacology of the Medically Ill, Psychopharmacology Teaching, and Psychosis and Special Diagnosis. In addition, child and adolescent psychiatry residents have rotations in pediatric neurology, adolescent substance abuse, school consultation, and forensic psychiatry. Residents spend the remainder of the year in continuing outpatient diagnostic and treatment work and in individually tailored elective rotations at CMH, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, community schools, and affiliated programs.

Didactic seminars occur weekly throughout the two-year residency. Child and adolescent psychiatry guest lectures, pediatric grand rounds, multidisciplinary case conferences, and additional educational seminars are regularly scheduled. Residents are excused from clinical duties to attend didactics.
