Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine Fellowship

Fellowship Description
The RIC Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) fellowship is under the direction of Sue Mukherjee, MD. The fellowship is accredited for a 1 year post double boarding and 2 years post PMR residency.

There is a balanced time commitment between outpatient, day programs, consulting, inpatient patient care activities, research and education. We have a 14-bed inpatient service that draws from international sources. Excellent learning opportunities are available in comprehensive, multidisciplinary clinics focused on the spasticity management, pediatric amputee and spina bifida. Organized rehabilitation experiences are available in the rheumatology, developmental and brachial plexus clinics. Skills developed include neurolytic blocks and intrathecal baclofen management. The fellow becomes an active member of RIC so has responsibilities in teaching residents and medical students as well as the opportunity to learn from the therapists and other subspecialty attendings at RIC. Research is an important part of the fellowship with opportunities to become involved with basic research scientists as well as with clinical projects.

Consulting to acute hospital, school systems and skilled care facilities provide the broad base of experiences encountered in clinical pediatric rehabilitation practice. For the older child and young adult transition clinics are available to attend and round out the experience. Sports are emphasized as a life skill for the child with disabilities and a large sports program is available. The fellow is an integral part of the pediatric team at RIC but has the advantage of drawing from multiple pediatric subspecialties in the Chicago area including Children’s Memorial Hospital, and Cook County Hospital.

Application Process:
*Please Note: We strongly recommend that applicants complete a pediatric rehab elective (minimum 1 week) at RIC prior to Nov 1 of the year they submit the application.  A two-day interview onsite to meet with the Pediatric Rehab Team will be arranged prior to Nov 1.  We expect offers to be made during the month of November for the following year.
