The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC), an affiliate of Northwestern University, is offering one-year fellowships in pain management as part of the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine ACGME accredited multidisciplinary pain fellowship. Five positions are available and offered to residents who have completed either a physical medicine and rehabilitation, anesthesiology, neurology, or psychiatry ACGME accredited residency program. Fellowship experience will include inpatient and outpatient work with the Department of Anesthesia at Northwestern University Medical School, PM&R at the Chronic Pain Care Center (CPCC) at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and palliative care at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The CPCC is an outpatient-based multidisciplinary pain clinic located in downtown Chicago at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago’s Gold Coast outpatient center. The facility works in conjunction with RIC’s acute musculoskeletal sports and spine clinic, the Sports and Spine Rehabilitation Center, located in the same facility. Clinical strategies for managing both acute and chronic pain will be addressed. The fellowship includes treatment of chronic pain, cancer pain management and pain research. Steven Stanos, DO

Judith Paice, PhD, RN, FAAN The CPCC offers treatment of chronic pain problems with various interdisciplinary treatment programs including a comprehensive four week eight hour per week program, modified one day per week treatment, and individual therapy based programs. Fellows are an integral part of the pain treatment team which also includes: - Physical & Occupational Therapy

Training in a complete array of clinical diagnoses will be available with an emphasis on: - Spine related pain disorders
- Post-surgical pain
- Neuropathic pain
- Musculoskeletal & joint disorders
- Myofascial Pain & Fibromyalgia
- Headache
- Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (formerly Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy)
- Other rehabilitation-related pain diagnoses
Fellows will also receive additional training in fluoroscopically guided spinal procedures with the Department of Anesthesiology and PM&R at RIC including: Cervical epidurals Cervical facet joint injections Thoracic epidurals Thoracic facet joint injections Lumbar epidurals Lumbar facet joint injections Medial branch blocks Sacroiliac joint injections Intraarticular hip, knee and shoulder Caudal epidural injections Intradiscal procedures Infusion therapies: intrathecal pumps Spinal cord stimulation
Fellows spend approximately two months working in cancer pain management at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Department of Hematology and Oncology under Dr. Judy Paice, Director, Cancer Pain Management Program. The fellow is exposed to both outpatient and inpatient cancer pain management as well as taking part with ongoing academic activities at the center. Approximately 20% of the program is dedicated to pain research The CPCC works closely with the RIC’s Center for Pain Studies, a free-standing pain research facility, under the guidance of Director, R. Norman Harden, MD. Dr. Harden is an internationally known pain rehabilitation researcher active in ongoing medication trials, outcomes research, and diagnostic criteria validation. *Candidates for the clinical fellowships must have completed a residency in physiatry, anesthesiology, neurology, or psychiatry and have a license to practice medicine in the State of Illinois at the time the fellowship begins.
