The James and Carmelita O’Boyle Brain Injury Medicine and Rehabilitation Fellowship at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago

Fellowship Description:
The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC), an affiliate of Northwestern University, is offering one to two-year fellowship in brain injury medicine and rehabilitation.  The fellowship experience will include experience in working inpatient care at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

This Fellowship is designed to be a one or two year training opportunity: year one (the core Fellowship) will have a clinical emphasis, while providing for some research involvement as well.  There is the potential for an opportunity to continue on to a second Fellowship year, which would be primarily research-oriented.  In order to continue on into a second year of Fellowship training, the candidate would need to identify and secure appropriate research funding (e.g. via internal or external grant awards).

Fellowship Objectives:
The core Fellowship program (year one) will consist of:

I.   Management of inpatients on the brain injury unit. 

II.  Participation in outpatient clinic.  Clinics will include:

• Adult brain injury
• Botox clinic/ spasticity clinic
• The opportunity to learn acupuncture/Chinese Medicine
• Exposure to medical-legal issues in management of BI patients
• Care of the injured worker
• Pediatric brain injury
• Baclofen pump management

III. Performing brain injury consultations
Consultations will be peformed at our affiliate acute care facility, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, a Level I Trauma Center, under the direction of a member of the Attending Staff.

IV. Participating in combined PM&R/Neurosurgery teaching rounds, both at RIC and at NMH.

V.   Formal and informal teaching opportunities. 

VI. Exposure to RIC’s rehabilitation ethics program

VII. Involvement in at least one brain injury-related clinical research project. 
(Fellows may elect to participate in a currently funded project, or may begin during year one to pursue a novel project of specific interest to them.  The latter option is particularly encouraged if the Fellow wishes to pursue a second year with a clinical research focus.)

Eligibility Criteria:
- Eligible candidates will have successfully completed a Residency, and be Board Eligible or Board Certified, in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation or in Neurology.[1]

- The intention to pursue an academic career is strongly desired, but not required.

Applicants will be expected to submit a letter of interest, C.V. and three professional references to the Fellowship Program Director.  Competitive candidates should anticipate planning an on-site visit/interview no later then Feb. 15^th, 2008.
