On behalf of our faculty, residents, fellows, and staff, I welcome you to the Department of Dermatology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. The primary missions of the Northwestern Department of Dermatology are:
Our department offers an outstanding three-year residency training program with the opportunity for a four-year research track that combines residency and fellowship training. Our residents gain clinical experience at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Children’s Memorial Hospital, NorthShore University HealthSystem, and the Jessie Brown Veteran’s Administration Medical Center. The McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University provides a rich academic environment in which our faculty members and residents actively participate. We have almost tripled the size of our clinical faculty during the past five years and continue to expand both clinical and research opportunities. Residents receive comprehensive exposure to all aspects of dermatology, while working in the outpatient clinics and on the inpatient floors. The patient population and complexity of disorders seen are diverse. In addition to learning about general dermatology, pediatric dermatology, cutaneous and aesthetic surgery, and dermatopathology, our residents participate in specialty services. Among these are: the skin cancer service for transplant patients, and clinics dedicated to pigmented skin lesions/melanoma, cutaneous lymphomas, industrial and contact skin disorders, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, nail disorders, tattoo removal, women's skin health, adolescent skin care, hair loss/alopecia areata, collagen vascular disorders, skin and hair problems in ethnic skin, acne and excessive hair clinic for women, and the MOHS surgery/laser service. Recognized internationally for expertise in keratinocyte biology, Northwestern has more than 30 researchers from seven departments conducting research in this field. Other departmental research focuses on cutaneous inflammation and immunology, the biology of carcinomas and melanomas, and epithelial stem cells. Our department, originally established in 1896, is one of the oldest departments of dermatology in the country. Graduates of Northwestern’s dermatology residency program and research training programs have become academic and community-based leaders in dermatology and dermatological research locally, nationally, and internationally.
