Biography
Dr. Mario Lacouture completed his dermatology training at the University of Chicago, after finishing 3 years of research fellowship training in Immunology-Rheumatology at Harvard. During his residency he was actively involved in bench and clinical research related to tyrosine kinase inhibitors as treatment for neoplasias. He was chosen to present the prestigious Charles B. Huggins Lecture by the University of Chicago’s Committee on Cancer Biology. Dr. Lacouture is actively involved in special clinics for patients with cutaneous malignancy, both epithelial and melanoma, as well as treating the dermatological side effects of cancer therapies.
Dr. Lacouture is the director of the Cancer Skin Care (Cancer Study of Chemotherapy Induced Cutaneous Adverse Reactions) Program at the Department of Dermatology and the Robert H.Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center. This Program has the mission to develop research and management strategies for skin conditions in cancer patients or those that arise as a result of anticancer therapies. The Cancer Skin Care Program is the first with this focus in the country, and has the goal of contributing to patient care, education, and research. The SERIES (Skin and Eye Reactions to Inhibitors of EGFR and kinaseS) Clinic is one of the first success stories of the Cancer Skin Care Program. The SERIES Clinic focuses on the early diagnosis and treatment of dermatological and ophthalmological reactions to EGFR and other kinase inhibitors (i.e. cetuximab, erlotinib, sorafenib), in order to ensure patient compliance with anticancer drug therapy and minimize the need for drug dose decrease, interruption or discontinuation.
Dr. Lacouture currently serves on several committees of the American Academy of Dermatology, including the Young Physicians Committee, the Task Force for Skin Care in Developing Countries, and the International Member Website Work Group.
