Joan Guitart, MD

Biography

Dr. Joan Guitart is the Director of both the Dermatopathology Unit and the multi-disciplinary Cutaneous Lymphoma Clinic. He is a Professor of Dermatology and Pathology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. Dr. Guitart is a medical graduate of the Autonomous University of Barcelona and did residencies in both anatomical and clinical pathology as well as in dermatology at the University of Illinois, Chicago. His fellowship training in dermatopathology was performed at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Dr. Guitart is board certified in pathology, dermatology, and dermatopathology. He is internationally known for his expertise in cutaneous T cell lymphoma (CTCL), and he directs the multidisciplinary CTCL clinic at Northwestern. has published almost 100 articles and chapters, largely focused on cutaneous T cell lymphoma and pathologic observations in skin tissue.

He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the International Society of Cutaneous Lymphoma, American Society of Dermatopathology, and is the Liaison to the International League of Dermatological Societies for the American Society of Dermatopathology. He is also the President of the Chicago Dermatological Society.

Research Interests

Dr. Guitart's research interests relate to the clinical and pathological aspects of cutaneous lymphomas. He is studying the utility of various biological response modifiers in the treatment of CTCL patients at various stages of the disease. Closely related to these investigations is on-going work on the immunophenotyping of lymphomas by flow cytometry. Dr. Guitart also has an interest in photodermatoses and skin carcinogenesis.
