The Cancer Skin Care Program

The Cancer Skin Care (Cancer Study of Chemotherapy Induced Cutaneous Adverse Reactions) Program at the Department of Dermatology and the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center has the mission to develop research and management strategies against skin conditions in cancer patients or those that arise as a result of anticancer drugs. This is one of the first programs with this focus in the country, and has the goal of contributing to patient care, education, and research.

Faculty:  Mario Lacouture, MD is the director of the Cancer Skin Care Program.

The Program has the priority of providing the highest quality of patient care. In order to achieve this, physicians from different specialties work together to improve cancer patient’s lives. The SERIES (Skin and Eye Reactions to Inhibitors of EGFR and kinaseS) Clinic is one of the first success stories of the Cancer Skin Care Program. It was established by members of the Departments of Dermatology, Ophthalmology, and Oncology at Northwestern University. The SERIES Clinic focuses on the early diagnosis and treatment of dermatological and ophthalmological reactions to EGFR and other kinase inhibitors (i.e. cetuximab, erlotinib, sorafenib), in order to ensure patient compliance with anticancer drug therapy and minimize the need for drug dose decrease, interruption or discontinuation.

The Cancer Skin Care Program will provide rapid (within several days) and direct evaluations by dermatologists for cancer patients. In addition, patients are counseled on skin and care to ensure maximum compliance with their anticancer therapy. Patients interested in enrolling in clinical trials will be offered options for participation.

Appointments can be made by contacting the nurse coordinator at 312-695-6299 and mentioning that patients need evaluation in the Cancer Skin Care Program.
