Paula H Stern, PhDPaula H Stern, PhD is Professor and Vice-Chair of Molecular Pharmacology and Biological Chemistry at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. She is a member of the Center for Endocrinology, Metabolism and Molecular Medicine, the Buehler Center on Aging, the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Feinberg Cardiovascular Center at Northwestern University. Dr. Stern trained at the University of Rochester (B.A., Biology), University of Cincinnati (M.S., Pharmacology), University of Michigan (Ph.D., Pharmacology), University of Rochester (postdoctoral, Bone Biology). Her research is in basic bone cell biology, specifically on the mechanisms of bone formation and bone loss elicited by hormones, growth factors, inflammatory mediators, therapeutic agents and mechanical forces, through their actions on cell signals in osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Her work has largely been funded by the National Institutes of Health, and has resulted in nearly 200 scientific publications. She has served on review panels for the NIH, NASA, the FDA and AIBS/DOD. She has served on the Councils of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics and the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research and the Board of the National Osteoporosis Foundation. She was President of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research and Vice-President of the National Osteoporosis Foundation. She teaches medical and graduate students in the areas of pharmacology and cellular signaling, and has trained more than 80 research scientists in her laboratory. She is the recipient of the Shirley Hohl Service Award of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, the Northwestern Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence, the George H. Joost Outstanding Teacher’s Award, Honorary Membership in Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honorary Society, and the Outstanding Alumni Award of the University of Michigan Department of Pharmacology.
