Jampol Named Chair of DRCR.net

Lee M. Jampol, MD, Louis Feinberg Professor of Ophthalmology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, will serve as chair of the Diabetic Retinopathy Clinical Research Network (DRCR.net) for the 2013-2017 term. As chair, Jampol will have the ability to influence a large network of centers to ask and answer critical questions about diabetic retinopathy.

The DRCR.net is a collaborative network dedicated to facilitating multicenter clinical research of diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, and associated conditions. It was formed in September 2002 and currently includes more than 109 participating sites with more than 320 physicians throughout the United States. It is funded by the National Eye Institute.  

Jampol was chair of ophthalmology at Feinberg from 1983-2010. He has served on the DRCR.net’s Data and Safety Monitoring Committee since the network’s inception. Some of Jampol’s past leadership experience includes trustee and vice-president of The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology from 1982-83, president of the Chicago Ophthalmological Society from 1989-91, president of the Macula Society from 1994-96, and most recently President of the American Ophthalmological Society from 2010-11.

Jampol will work closely with the Coordinating Center and current network Chair Neil Bressler as chair-elect in 2012 and will assume the chair role starting January 1, 2013. As such, he will become a member of the Network’s Operations Group and Executive Committee beginning in 2012.

At the medical school, Jampol’s research focuses on inflammatory diseases of the retina, cystoid macular edema, pharmacology of the retina, and central serous chorioretinopathy.
