Cora Palmer, RN-BC, BSN

Magnet Nurse of the Year

Cora Palmer, RN-BC, BSN, was recognized with the National Magnet Nurse of the Year Award by the American Nurses Credentialing Center for her outstanding contribution in Transformational Leadership. The award is given to a nurse who “creates a vision for the future and the systems and environment necessary to achieve that vision.” Palmer serves as her unit’s pain expert nurse and is a mentor to both new and experienced staff. In 2008, she launched the Chicago area chapter of the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses, which today includes more than 130 nurses from multiple Chicago area hospitals. Their activities have received national awards and recognition.

Honoring a Hospital Leader 

Eric Conley, vice president of Operations at Northwestern Memorial, has been honored as a "Business Leader of Color" by Chicago United. The award honors accomplished corporate and civic leaders for their innovation and leadership. Conley, who joined Northwestern Memorial in 2010, will be featured with the other winners in Chicago United’s Business Leaders of Color publication, scheduled to be released with the November 7 issue of Crain’s Chicago Business. Chicago United promotes multiracial leadership in business to advance parity in economic opportunity.

Feinberg Staff Scholarships Awarded

The Feinberg School of Medicine Staff Relations Committee (SRC) awarded five Feinberg staff members scholarships from the new SRC scholarship fund on October 19. The scholarships help offset the costs of professional development activities. The SRC received more than 40 applications for the scholarship. Recipients include:

  • Adriane Easte, a financial specialist in the Department of Preventive Medicine, who will use the funds to help pay for the certification exam for research administrators.
  • Christopher Warren, research project coordinator in the Institute for Healthcare Studies, who will use the funds to attend the 2011 meeting of the American Public Health Association.
  • Matthew Temkin, business administrator for the Center for Genetic Medicine, who will use the funds too participate in the University's six-part leadership and management series.
  • Phillip Cooper, research program coordinator in the Department of Urology, who will use the funds to help pay for pre-medical school classes.
  • Michelle Morely, research coordinator in the Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, who will use the funds to offset the cost of her Master’s degree in clinical research and regulatory administration.
