Academic Advising

Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine is dedicated to providing strategic, holistic academic support that empowers every student to thrive.

Through collaborative partnerships and evidence-based practices, we create a responsive environment where students can explore their goals, address challenges early and succeed academically.

Academic Support Partnership Services

We support your success at every phase of your medical education. Services include:

  • Workload management and study strategies.
  • Strengths-based academic assessments.
  • Goal setting and individualized study plans.
  • Support for module and shelf exams.
  • Peer education and resource referrals.
  • USMLE preparation.
  • Workshops on test-taking, time management and more.

Evidence-Based Approaches to Learning

Our approach to learning emphasizes evidence-based strategies like active retrieval practice, spaced repetition, elaboration and reflection. These are integrated throughout the curriculum, and we offer students opportunities to adjust their approach to the rigors of the Feinberg curriculum:

  • A learning strategies assessment to better understand their strengths and potential for growth.
  • One-on-one guidance on self-regulated learning strategies, learning guides, time management, organization and executive functioning skills.

Science in Medicine Content Review

Long-term knowledge retention is critical for effective patient care. Systematic application and review of content is built into the Feinberg curriculum through:

  • Weekly content review sessions.
  • Weeklong Synthesis & Application Modules that review and integrate knowledge across content areas through simulation and case-based learning.
  • Student-created resources that facilitate active recall.
  • Practice exams for each Phase 1 module.
  • Early clinical experience in Education-Centered Medical Homes.

Tutoring

Our program is academically rigorous — peers are available to help you succeed. MD/PhD and M3/M4 students who have completed Phase 1 of the MD program serve as tutors.

To find the right tutor for your needs, email Nicole Fancher at nicole@northwestern.edu.

Meetings With Faculty & Staff

Educational leaders in the Augusta Webster Office of Medical Education are accessible and invested in the success of our students. Students may meet one-on-one with faculty to discuss topics including academic success and wellness.

To set up a meeting for academic success, contact Khalilah Gates, MD at k-gates@northwestern.edu. Additionally, you may contact any of the deans or staff.
