Problem-Based Learning

Problem-Based Learning (PBL) uses clinical cases to stimulate inquiry, critical thinking and knowledge application and integration. Students actively collaborate to examine cases, gaining a deeper understanding of medical principles and develop lifelong learning skills.

PBL aims to:

  • Apply basic science knowledge in a clinical contexts.
  • Engage in critical thinking and problem-solving.
  • Self-evaluate and collaborate with peers.
  • Utilize technology and identify appropriate resources.
  • Contextualize and communicate knowledge.
  • Seek, provide and incorporate feedback.

PBL groups — six to nine students and a faculty facilitator — work through cases in multiple sessions, mimicking real-world patient data acquisition. Students develop hypotheses, identify learning issues and assign tasks collaboratively. At the conclusion of a case, the students create a concept map synthesizing their understanding.
