Alumni Weekend 2023
As Summer fades and the leaves start to change, it’s that time again-back to school season, and we’re not just talking about students! Mark your calendars for October 13-14 and join us at Northwestern University’s Department of Physical Therapy and Human Movement Sciences (NUPTHMS) for our annual Alumni Weekend.
Alumni weekend is a fantastic opportunity not only to reconnect with your fellow classmates and friends from NUPTHMS but also engage in enriching experiences. You’ll have the chance to learn from distinguished Alumni & Faculty on a diverse range of continuing education (CE) courses (in-person & via Zoom). This year’s CE offerings include:- “Mechanisms Based Management of Chronic Pain: the Interaction of Neuropathy, Hypertension, and Nocioplasticity"
- "Tailor-made Care for Patients with Dementia"
- "Give Me Back My Life! Translating Cancer Rehabilitation into Care"
- "Covid Pandemic: Where are We Now?"
In addition to these courses, we’ll be hosting an Alumni Luncheon where we will recognize and honor our outstanding Alumni award recipients. You can also look forward to an engaging and entertaining medical improv class, a new faculty meet and greet/happy hour for all, and explore various activities supported by the Feinberg School of Medicine (FSM).
We’re thrilled to invite you to this incredible weekend. To register, read more about each CE course, and see a full itinerary of the weekend, click the purple box below labeled 'Register & More Information Here'. Join us for a weekend of connection, learning, and celebration!

FRI | 9:00 AM: Mechanisms Based Management of Chronic Pain: the Interaction of Neuropathy, Hypertension and Nociplasticity With Carol Courtney, PT, PhD, FAAOMPT, Craig Hensley, PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT, Renzo Mendoza, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT, and Rob Sweet, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT. Our understanding of chronic pain has expanded greatly in recent years. Now, physical therapists must determine the ‘pain diagnosis’ as a part of the examination process by recognizing clinical signs and symptoms in the patient presentation that relate to specific alterations in pain processing. Accordingly, our interventions should be directed at the aberrant pain mechanism. Participants in this course will learn about clinical features of chronic and nociceptive pain. In addition, this course will discuss connections between high blood pressure and chronic pain, and the mechanism of diabetic neuropathy and neuropathic pain. Instruction will be provided regarding mechanism-based management of neuropathic pain and the use of manual therapy and exercise for mechanism-based pain management. *This event is hybrid. This event conflicts with the Northwestern Memorial Tour. FRI | 3:30 PM: Navigating the Power Dynamics Surrounding Sexual Harassment This one-hour course will explore the occurrence of sexual harassment with respect to power dynamics and gender identity. It will discuss the occurrences within patient care as well as the healthcare team. Strategies for addressing sexual harassment in the workplace will be shared. *This event is hybrid. FRI | 4:30 PM: Tailor-made Care for Patients with Dementia SAT | 9:00 AM: Give Me Back My Life! Translating Rehabilitation into Care *This event is in-person. SAT | 10:00 AM: Covid Pandemic: Where are We Now? We will discuss the unique needs for the patients with long haul Covid. Some of our usual PT interventions will not be effective with this population. Each patient is unique and each person's needs for oxygen is different and needs to be individually titrated for personal oxygen saturation to be adequate. That makes challenges for rehabilitation significant and often require minute by minute monitoring and adjusting the patient's titration of oxygen significant. This course will also discuss uniquely improved methods of titration of oxygen depending on the activity level and we will share some patient cases and invite discussion from course participant case studies as well. *This event is hybrid. |
