Advancing Interventions for Stroke Motor Recovery Leveraging the Academic-Healthsystem Tripartite Partnership in Rehabilitation Services
Speaker: Mike Ellis, PT, DPT | Professor and Associate Chair of Translational Research Physical Therapy and Human Movement Sciences
Abstract: This session will highlight Northwestern University's efforts to strengthen translational research in stroke rehabilitation by creating a more coordinated and intentional collaboration between the Department of Physical Therapy & Human Movement Sciences and Northwestern memorial Healthcare. The discussion will focus on how this emerging research-practice partnership supports the movement of laboratory ad early-phase discoveries into real-world clinical environments.
A central example will feature the ongoing implementation of an NIH‑funded clinical trial conducted alongside routine inpatient stroke rehabilitation. Dr. Ellis will describe the scientific background and development of the intervention, the process of integrating research activities within a busy clinical service, and strategies used to ensure feasibility, safety, and strong communication between investigators and frontline clinicians. Lessons learned—both scientific and operational—will be shared to illustrate how collaborative structures can accelerate innovation, enhance patient care, and advance the science of neurorehabilitation. - PT CEU**

Physical Therapy in the Age of Ozempic: What Every PT Should Know about GLP-1 Agonists
Speaker: Christine Schauerte, PT, DPT | Board Certified Specialist in Orthopedics, Fellow, American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists, Lecturer at Northwestern University and Human Movement Sciences
Abstract: Physical therapists routinely see patients who have diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, or significant risk factors for these conditions. Currently, there is an explosion in the use of GLP-1 agonist medications to help manage both Type 2 diabetes and obesity. Understanding the clinical implications of GLP-1 agonist medication use in the PT population will be presented. Given the systemic effects of both diabetes and obesity, the pathophysiological effects on muscle tissue will be highlighted, including the evidence regarding the risk for sarcopenia. Attendees will leave with knowledge on promoting preservation of muscle mass and ways to improve glycemic markers, with particular attention to the subset of patients who may be experiencing rapid weight loss due to unprecedented use of this class of medication. - PT Panel
1:30-3:30 PM
Free to attend
Join us for an engaging panel discussion, “New Directions in Physical Therapy: Opportunities Outside the Clinic,” where we explore the diverse career paths beyond traditional patient care. This panel will feature alumni and leaders who have successfully transitioned into roles such as private practice ownership, professional organizations, research, education, and more. Panelists will share their experiences, insights, and lessons learned as they navigated unique career trajectories. Attendees will gain practical advice on leveraging their PT background in innovative ways, and discover emerging opportunities in the profession. Whether you’re considering a career pivot or simply curious about what’s possible, this session will inspire you to think beyond the clinic and chart your own path forward.
We are honored to feature Dr. Joseph P. Farrell, PT, DPT, MAppSC, GDMT, FAPTA ('76), founding fellow and first president of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists, acclaimed educator, and distinguished Catherine Worthingham Fellow of the APTA.
