Substance Use Research Training Program for Physician Researchers in Emergency Medicine
The Substance Use Research Training Program for Physician Researchers in Emergency Medicine (SUPR-EM) is an early-career research program that enhances training for Emergency Medicine residents at McGaw Medical Center.
This program is funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA R2505711; MPI: McCarthy/Kim).

Core Curriculum
The SUPR-EM curriculum includes workshops and seminars on research methods, substance use, research ethics and best practices. Scholars will work closely with faculty mentors from Emergency Medicine and partnering departments to design and conduct independent research projects that prepare them for independent research.
This program is designed for those planning to pursue a research fellowship and those interested in fields such as Toxicology, Addiction Medicine, Pain Medicine, Palliative Care or Social Emergency Medicine.
Program Features
This program provides:
- Small group sessions on research fundamentals, substance use and research ethics.
- One-on-one mentorship from established emergency care and substance use investigators
- Tuition and travel coverage for completion of the ACEP Research Academy
- Up to $35,000 in seed funding to support research projects (over four years)
- Funding for a laptop computer while in training
- Funding to attend one scientific meeting annually
Eligibility and Application
Applicants must be residents or fellow trainees within the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University.
