My interests are within the Children's Hospital Neonatal Consortium (CHNC: http://www.thechnc.org). The CHNC has developed a database focusing on infants with uncommon congenital anomalies and/or acquired complications related to preterm birth in 34 regional NICUs since 2010 in the United States and Canada. We aim to describe the care and outcomes for a population of critically-ill infants that has not been a traditional area of focus in existing registries. Our long term goals are to: (1) establish standards of care and clinical practice guidelines for infants with uncommon but high-acuity illnesses, (2) increase and improve the knowledge base and evidence of care for these infants, (3) reduce unnecessary variation in their care (4) improve their short- and long-term outcomes and (5) maintain and foster a forum of collaboration to persist with these missions. The contemporary descriptions of the populations, prediction of outcomes, and inter-center variations are ongoing for: infants with severe BPD, surgical necrotizing enterocolitis, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, diaphragmatic hernia, and gastroschisis. These data are helpful in family antenatal counseling, in the design of future clinical trials and collaborative quality improvement initiatives.[Shorten text]
