As a rheumatology researcher, she has a longstanding interest in joint replacement and non-invasive interventions to improve the quality of life among people with arthritis. Her applied research interests include the investigation of behavioral factors to prevent disability in older adults with osteoarthritis. As a principal investigator, she led NIH-funded epidemiological studies investigating physical activity benefits for older adults with osteoarthritis and cost effectiveness studies. She led a national study to monitor physical activity data via state-of-the-art accelerators on over 2,000 participants in the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI). She has served on advisory boards for national clinical trials funded through the National Institutes for Health (NIH), the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), and the Department of Veterans affairs. Early in her career, she published a textbook on statistical methods.[Shorten text]
