Dr. Kim is a professor of plastic and reconstructive surgery with a clinical focus on aesthetic and breast cancer. He grew up in Toronto, Canada and went to Harvard to study English and American Literature. After a brief stint as a failed writer, he went to Stanford Medical School. Dr. Kim graduated from Stanford in 1997 with his MD and a concurrent Master of Arts in English Literature. He was in the inaugural integrated general and plastic surgery residency at the Baylor-Texas Medical Center, and from there went to UCLA to complete a joint orthopedic-plastic surgery hand and microsurgery fellowship under Dr. Neil Ford Jones. Dr. Kim has been on faculty at Northwestern since 2004.[Shorten text]

Academic Focus

Dr. Kim's research focuses on breast cancer reconstruction and aesthetic surgery outcomes. He has published over 180 peer reviewed articles and holds 11 patents on novel medical devices. He is the developer of the Breast Reconstruction Risk Assessment (BRA) Score. Dr. Kim lectures widely on novel techniques and technologies in plastic surgery, and sits on the Editorial Board as Associate Editor of the main specialty journal, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
