Until recently, treatments in ophthalmology have focused on slowing the inevitable progression of eye diseases, rather than restoring lost sight. Here at Northwestern, Departmental Chairman Nicholas Volpe, MD, and his research team are intent on pursuing scientific breakthroughs that can change the treatment of today’s most disabling eye diseases.
Our department is leading extensive clinical and basic science studies to do just that. Currently, we have many large, competitive grants from the National Eye Institute to advance our programs.
