David J. Palmer, MD, is a Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Ophthalmology, at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine where he as served on the faculty since 1997. Palmer, MD, is a Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Ophthalmology, at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine where he as served on the faculty since 1997. Dr. Palmer received his bachelor's degree in biology with high distinction at Indiana University, Bloomington, IN, in 1976 and received his MD degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in 1980. Following his medicine internship at Michael Reese Hospital, Chicago (1981), Dr. Palmer completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary in 1984, then completed his glaucoma fellowship at Harvard University's Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Boston, in 1985, after which he began his practice.
Dr. Palmer's general practice with a subspecialty in glaucoma has always been integrated with academic medicine. Prior to joining the Northwestern faculty, he became an Assistant Clinical Professor in Ophthalmology at Rush Medical Center, Chicago. Research interests have included non-invasive glaucoma procedures, traumatic hyphema management, the medical treatment of glaucoma and elevated eye pressure post-cataract surgery, the surgical management of bleb leaks, and the effect of topical prostaglandins on nail growth and brittleness. He has authored numerous articles and several book chapters, served as a reviewer for several journals, and has lectured nationally and internationally.
Serving as the chairman of the Eye Care America-Senior Eye Care Program committee of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Dr. Palmer was the academic institutions liaison for the Illinois Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, is the past-president of the Chicago Glaucoma Society and Chicago Ophthalmological Society, and serves as a delegate to the Illinois State Medical Society where he successfully helped introduce, draft, and pass the Topical Eye Drop Act, Illinois HB 3638.[Shorten text]

Clinical Focus

Dr. David Palmer's clinical practice encompasses general ophthalmology, including cataract surgery with a subspecialty focus on glaucoma. Patients are seen from their later teens or beyond in both the Chicago Loop and Glenview locations. Surgical procedures are performed at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago, or at Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital.
