NPH2: Nature, Planet & Human Health Initiative

The Nature, Planet and Human Health (NPH2) initiative at the Osher Center for Integrative Health builds on growing scientific evidence demonstrating the health benefits of nature exposure and the connection between human well-being and planetary health. Through research, education, clinical care and advocacy, the initiative brings together investigators, healthcare professionals, organizations and communities to advance discovery, environmental stewardship and meaningful action.

Our Work

NPH2 advances the connection between human and planetary health across four core pillars:

Research

We conduct original studies and share high-quality evidence on the health benefits of nature exposure.

Education

We engage the medical community and the public and mentor medical students through initiatives such as the Planetary Health Report Card.

Clinical Care

We integrate nature directly into patient care through programs such as Nature/Earth Rx.

Advocacy

We promote policy and community awareness that foster environmental stewardship and human wellness.

Our Vision

A world where people and nature thrive together, each supporting the health and resilience of the other.

We strive for equitable access to clean air, water and soil, as well as safe, protected and restored natural spaces. Meaningful experiences in nature can improve public health, strengthen communities and inspire environmental stewardship. By fostering this reciprocal relationship, we can support human well-being and planetary health for generations to come.

Our Mission

Connecting science, medicine and communities for a healthier, more resilient future.

We strengthen and promote the growing scientific evidence detailing the direct health benefits of nature exposure. When nature flourishes, people flourish. By uniting investigators, healthcare professionals, organizations and local communities, we weave connections that inspire discovery, stewardship and meaningful action.
