Integrative Medicine Grand Rounds are sponsored by the Osher Center for Integrative Health in partnership with The Institute for Public Health and Medicine (IPHAM). The goal of our grand rounds series is to advance awareness of evidence-based integrative medicine in clinical care, education and research across Northwestern. Integrative Medicine Grand Rounds is open to all faculty and staff in an effort to increase their familiarity with this growing healthcare movement.

Title: Stress & Supplements: HPA Axis Dysfunction & The Role of Adaptogens
Synopsis of the presentation:
In the pandemic era, patients are increasingly turning to over-the-counter natural products to help address chronic stress. This talk will review the evidence and clinical application of adaptogenic dietary supplements, and how they interact with the HPA axis. It will discuss the current state of regulation of dietary supplements in the US, and how to best guide patients on their safe and appropriate use.
- Analyze the science of adaptogenic herbs relative to stress
- Describe how dietary supplements are regulated, labeled and the types of claims permitted
- Describe the impact of chronic stress on optimal functioning of the HPA axis (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal)appraise available resources for the safety and efficacy of natural products
