Training the public health workforce through relevant, hands-on workshops.

The Master of Public Health (MPH) program offers a variety of engaging capacity-building workshops that provide skill-building opportunities to the public health workforce in Chicago and beyond. Workshops address diverse topics and are open to learners with all levels of public health knowledge. Participants learn career-enhancing skills, while networking with peers from across the region and faculty from Northwestern University.

Community-Engaged Research (Two-Part Series)

  • Part 1: Introduction to Community-Engaged Research

    Tuesday, June 10, 2025
    12 - 1 PM Central
    Virtual Workshop
    Over the course of one hour, attendees will learn the basics of community-engaged research (CEnR), community-based participatory research (CBPR), and the community engagement spectrum from Dr. Gregory Phillips II. In addition to learning models and terminology, attendees will also discuss recommendations and guidance on working with academic partners, and will be provided with a packet of reference material to assist with future collaborations. This packet will include a glossary of terms (e.g., biosketch, indirect rates, consultants), information on potential funders, guidance on collaborative decision making, and a list of current funding opportunities.
  • Part 2: Stories from the Community

    Tuesday, June 17, 2025
    12 - 1 PM Central
    Virtual Workshop
    Over the course of 45-minutes, two community representatives actively engaged in community/academic partnerships (Dr. Christopher Balthazar and Mr. Alfredo Flores) and a former community representative who now works on the academic side of research (Mr. Erik Elias Glenn) will serve on a panel discussing their experiences with community-engaged research. The final 15 minutes of the session will be dedicated to addressing questions posed by attendees.

Applying Health Literacy Best Practices

Virtual Workshop

Health literacy is the degree to which individuals can find, understand, and use information and services to inform health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others. In this hands-on, virtual workshop we will review evidence-based health literacy ‘best practices’ and provide examples of how they have been used to improve patients’ health experiences and outcomes. We will also devote time to applying these best practices to patient education materials and services brought by attendees.

Introduction to Public Health Data Science in R

This half-day, in-person workshop will cover where to find data, how to interpret them, and how to analyze them. There will be a specific focus on the use of R and RStudio, an open-source software package for data science.

The workshop will:

  • Provide an overview of sources of public health data from Chicago and nationally
  • Review the content of an introductory biostatistics course
  • Cover data importing, data types, visualization, comparing means, and regression
