Annual Promotion & Tenure Cycle

Promotion and tenure cases proposed to take effect on Sept. 1, 2025, are still under review. We expect decisions to be communicated in early July.

The promotion and tenure review process occurs on an annual cycle, with awards of promotion and tenure taking effect on Sept. 1 of the year following application. Faculty are evaluated for promotion or tenure based on the criteria established by their career track. Learn more about the promotion criteria for your career track by reviewing the following resources:

  • Information Guide for Appointments, Promotion and Tenure
Our information guide is updated regularly and intended to provide transparency and assist faculty members in planning for and successfully achieving promotion and/or tenure.
  • Annual Promotion and Tenure Information Program
We host an annual program to explain the promotion and tenure process.

Promotion & Tenure Timeline

The promotion and tenure process can take about 20 months from start to finish, meaning you need to plan and prepare well in advance of your anticipated promotion/tenure effective date. Building your career portfolio is an ongoing process, but when you are ready to formally apply for promotion/tenure, expect the process to start in the first half of the calendar year (depending on your department's internal process), with an approved promotion/tenure decision taking effect on Sept. 1 of the following calendar year (i.e., for promotions effective Sept. 1, 2026, the process begins in early 2025).
