 Scientific Poster Session & Networking Reception

Enjoy light refreshments, view posters, and network with other KUH researchers.  

The Scientific Poster Session & Networking Reception is a wonderful opportunity for physician and basic scientists across Chicago who are engaged in KUH research to gather and make connections and discuss current research in their fields. Moreover, it gives researchers at all career stages valuable experience presenting their research and communicating science to an interdisciplinary audience.  

CALL FOR POSTERS!

We invite graduate and medical students, postdoctoral scholars, residents, fellows, and junior faculty to present a poster showcasing their clinical or basic research in the fields of kidney, benign urology, or benign hematology research.   

  • Posters with a cancer focus will not be accepted.  
  • For Chicago KUH FORWARD appointed trainees, presenting a poster is mandatory.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR POSTERS!

   1) Prepare your poster

  • The maximum poster size allowed is 60 inches wide x 60 inches high.
  • Push pins will be provided.

   2) Present your poster on symposium day!

  • Check-in begins at 12:30 PM. Posters should be hung between 12:30 and 1:15 PM.
  • The Poster Session & Networking Reception begins immediately after the panel session and ends at 5:30 PM.
  • At the end of the event, please take your poster down. Any posters left hanging will be disposed.

 Keynote Speaker and Panelists

 Jeffrey Lebensburger

Dr. Germino joined NIDDK as its Deputy Director in 2009. In addition to his role as the Deputy, he is an Adjunct Professor at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Acting Branch chief for the Kidney Disease Branch, and Section Chief of the Polycystic Kidney Disease Laboratory. He has served on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Polycystic Kidney Research Foundation, as Chair of the Scientific Review Board of the Telethon Foundation of Italy, as Councilor of the American Society of Clinical Investigation, a member of the Board of Directors of Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, and currently serves as an ex officio member of the Fogarty Center Advisory Council. He has received multiple awards including an NIH MERIT Award, induction into the Association of American Physicians, the Lillian Jean Kaplan International Prize for the Advancement in the Understanding of Polycystic Kidney Disease, and the Shaul Massry Distinguished Lectureship of the National Kidney Foundation. 

Dr. Germino received his undergraduate degree from Loyola University of Chicago, his medical degree from the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago, trained in internal medicine and nephrology at Yale, spent a research year at Oxford University, and was full time faculty at Johns Hopkins from 1992-2009 where he directed its Polycystic Kidney Disease Center.

 

Tamara Isakova

Dr. Anderson assumed his leadership role at University of Chicago and UChicago Medicine in 2022 where he oversees health care delivery, medical and biological research, education, and community-engagement enterprises. He works closely with leaders across the University to drive growth of the health system and integrate the academic, basic research, and clinical programs to leverage the strengths of each, including efforts to create fundamental new knowledge, train future leaders, enhance community health, health equity, and access to care for communities in Chicago’s South Side and beyond. 

Prior to joining UChicago Medicine, Anderson was the Director of the Department of Medicine, the William Osler Professor of Medicine, and Physician-in-Chief of The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Before joining Johns Hopkins in 2014, Anderson led the Cardiovascular Research Center at the University of Iowa and served sequentially as director of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and the Department of Medicine. He was also a member of the medical faculty at Vanderbilt University, directing the cardiology training program and the clinical arrhythmia service. 

Anderson earned his bachelor's degree in biology with honors from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, and both his Ph.D. in physiology and his M.D. from the University of Minnesota. He completed his internal medicine residency, post-doctoral research, and fellowships in cardiology and clinical cardiac electrophysiology at Stanford University. He was elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI) in 2002, the Association of American Physicians (AAP) in 2006, and the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) in 2017.

 

Praveen Thumbikat

Dr. Prochaska attended medical school at the University of Chicago, where she also completed her internal medicine residency. She then pursued a clinical nephrology fellowship through the Brigham and Women’s Hospital–Massachusetts General Hospital combined nephrology program. Following this, Dr. Prochaska completed a nephrology research fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, focusing on epidemiologic research in kidney stones, supported by a T32 and an F32. During her research fellowship, she also earned a Master of Public Health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She returned to the University of Chicago with support from a K23 award and now an R01, continuing her research on kidney stones and urine composition with the goal of preventing kidney stones.

 

Praveen Thumbikat

Dr. Chu is a board-certified attending Pediatric Urologist at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and an Associate Professor of Urology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Dr. Chu completed his medical degree at Weill Cornell Medical College, residency at Duke University Medical Center, and a fellowship in pediatric urology at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. His clinical interests include the span of pediatric urology practice, with special focus on spina bifida and nephrolithiasis. Dr. Chu's research program is supported by several internal and external grants including serving as Principal Investigator on a National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases–funded K23 grant investigating kidney function in children with spina bifida and Principal Investigator on a Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute award comparing antegrade versus retrograde enema programs for bowel incontinence for people across the lifespan with spina bifida. Dr. Chu also serves as a dedicated research mentor to urology residents and fellows. Dr. Chu considers his most important role to be a parent to his four children and husband to his dear wife. 

 Getting to the Symposium

The Symposium will be held at the Simpson Querrey Biomedical Research Center (SQBRC), 303 E Superior St, Chicago, IL 60611.

  • Driving: The nearest Northwestern parking garage is the Erie Ontario Parking Garage located at 321 E Erie St with entrances on either Erie or Ontario. Attendees who requested a discounted parking voucher when registering for the symposium can pick up their voucher at the symposium check-in table.
  • Taxi or Rideshare: The drop off location is 303 E Superior St, Chicago, IL.
  • Public transportation: The closest CTA train stop is the Red Line–Chicago stop (Chicago and State). From there it is about a 20-minute walk to SQBRC. CTA Buses 3, 66 120, 121 and 157 all stop directly across the street from SQBRC.

2025 Chicago KUH FORWARD Symposium

Thank you to everyone who participated in our 4th Annual Symposium! Drawing participants from diverse disciplines around the Chicago area, the symposium showcased groundbreaking research and fostered invaluable networking opportunities. Special thanks to our keynote speaker, Jeffrey Lebensberger, DO, for his presentation.

KUHR-TN national meeting

The first Kidney Urology Hematology Research Training Network (KUHR-TN) national meeting was held on Aug. 14-15, 2024, in Cleveland, OH.

Chicago KUH FORWARD had a strong presence:

  • Maggie Fain, a predoc trainee from Northwestern mentored by Susan Quaggin, MD, gave a research talk, and seven other trainees presented scientific posters.
  • Two program faculty, Holly Kramer, MD, from Loyola University, and Jennie Lin, PhD, from Northwestern, represented our program as instructors for two Master Classes.
  • Special recognition to Karla Marquez-Nogueras, postdoc trainee from Loyola University Chicago, for serving on the trainee planning committee and chairing a plenary session.

UIC Speaker Seminar

In Spring 2024, the University of Illinois at Chicago Hematology and Sickle Cell Center hosted Elizabeta Nemeth, PhD, Professor of Medicine & director of the Center for Iron Disorders at UCLA.
