St. Frances of Rome 8th Graders

Molecular Biology (DNA and Protein Gel)

Molecular biology focuses on the systems and processes that make life possible! We are investigators asking the “who, what, when, where and how” of biological molecules (including DNA, RNA and protein.) At this station students didn't just learn about DNA, they actually saw it!

Microbiology

Microbiology is the study of bacteria, viruses, and other microbes that are invisible to the eye. At this station students got to see how we grow bacteria and other microorganisms!

NGS

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) is a technology for finding the specific order, or sequence, of the four DNA building blocks (A, C, G, and T) in the genes of any living thing. We use NGS to study genetic differences connected with diseases and illnesses. At this station students got to see how we use a robot to help us do NGS!

Bioinformatics & Medical Illustration

Visual learners work in science too! In Bioinformatics, we use computers to wrangle huge amounts of biological information into tables, graphs and other images that communicate our data analysis. In Medical Illustration, we create artwork that communicates concepts from medicine and biomedical research in a visual language. At this station students got to see how we wrangle data, as well as how we create biomedical animations!

Microscopy

Microscopy is an important technical skill for biomedical research. At this station students took a look at cells under a microscope and learned about microscopy in cancer research!

Chemical Biology & Cancer Therapeutics

The cells in your body grow by dividing.  Normal cells know when to stop growing, but cancer cells don’t! At this station students learned how researchers look to chemistry for ways to treat cancer.

Lunch at Gino's East!

Students were invited to eat with the lab members at Gino's East before leaving.
