Message from Residency Program Director

Residency Program Director
H. Hunt Batjer, MD

Neurosurgery is the most important and elusive frontier in medicine.  In that spirit, the goal of our resident training program is to help our residents explore their areas of interest within neurosurgery, to define their career goals, and then help them accomplish those goals.  Our goal is to avoid imposing a predetermined career path onto the residents but rather help them find the path that best fits their interest.

To do this, we expose our residents to the full scope of neurosurgical practice and career paths.  This exposure ranges from some of the most advanced clinical programs in the country to cutting edge basic science and translational research.  Residents have rotations in each major subspecialty area of neurosurgery to give them experience with the full breadth of the field.  Each resident has a faculty mentor to help them schedule and structure their dedicated elective time in a way that leads the resident to the career path they define.

In this way, Northwestern’s Neurosurgery training program hopes to inspire our residents to become tomorrow’s neurosurgical leaders.  Regardless, we are dedicated to helping them find careers that they will find enjoyable and meaningful.

Congratulations to our residents for winning first place in the CNS Resident SANS Challenge at the 2006 Congress of Neurological Surgeons annual meeting!  Click here
