Neurosurgery-Bioengineering Collaborations
A number of collaborations are underway with bioengineering faculty and laboratories at Northwestern University’s McCormick School of Engineering. These involve existing projects in robotics, molecular imaging, nanotechnology and material sciences. Career development opportunities are available for neurosurgery residents and faculty in a number of bioengineering laboratories.
A novel strategic initiative has been launched to encourage paired faculty from neurosurgery and engineering to develop specific projects reflecting novel basic and translational collaborations, aimed at new team development and acquisition of pilot data for joint applications for external funding. A joint Neurosurgery-McCormick Engineering Research Day was held on October 14, 2005 at the McCormick School of Engineering. It included more than 40 poster presentations from neurosurgery and engineering investigators. The wine and cheese open house format allowed a wonderful exchange of ideas among both groups and particularly engaged young faculty and trainees.
