Northwestern Memorial Hospital’s Neurosciences Program Rated Illinois’ Highest And Among America’s Best in 2009 U.S. News & World Report Rankings
The neurology and neurosurgery programs at Northwestern Memorial Hospital rank 11th in the nation among thousands of programs evaluated for the 2009 edition of U.S. News & World Report's “America's Best Hospitals”. Editors for the influential ranking reviewed 4,861 hospitals in 16 different clinical areas. At 11, it is the highest-rated neurology and neurosurgery program of any Illinois hospital.

Breakthrough Research on Glioblastomas Featured on CBS New York

Dr. James Chandler, Surgical Director of the Northwestern Brain Tumor Institute and Associate Professor of Neurological Surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Dr. Markus Bredel, Director of the Northwestern Brain Tumor Institute Research Program and Assistant Professor of Neurological Surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, and Dr. Sunit Das, Chief Resident of Neurosurgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, have contributed to research published in this month's Journal of the American Medical Association, out July 14th.  Their breakthrough research on glioblastomas has been featured in a news story on CBS New York.

"Perfect Mirror Laser" Featured on CNN.com
Dr. Bernard Bendok was featured in an article expressing the benefits of a new tool that allows doctors to use laser surgery in complex operations, which has been hailed as a breakthrough in minimally invasive laser technology. Originally designed as a military tool for the United States Department of Defense, the fiber-optic invention is revolutionizing the ways surgeons carry out brain surgeries.

Second Annual Northwestern Radiosurgery Symposium
Dr. Robert Levy and Dr. MaryAnne Marymont will co-direct the Second Annual Northwestern Radiosurgery Symposium, an important multidisciplinary program on current and future trends in radiosurgery, scheduled for Friday, September 28, 2007 at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.  Internationally recognized experts from the Barrow Neurological Institute and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center will join Northwestern faculty for presentations and discussion.

Dr. Hunt Batjer Named Chairman of the American Board of Neurological Surgery
Effective June 1, 2007, Dr. Hunt Batjer will serve as Chairman of the American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS).  The ABNS governs the examination and certification of neurosurgeons in the United States.

Dr. Bernard Bendok Teaches About Endovascular Treatments at Neurosurgical Society Meetings and Resident Course
In the Spring of 2007, Dr. Bernard Bendok served as a faculty member at the Interurban Neurosurgical Society Annual Meeting, the practical clinic "Endovascular Management of Ischemic and Hemorrhagic Stroke" at the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) Annual Meeting, and the AANS course: Endovascular Techniques for Residents.  Dr. Bendok may be reached for appointments at (312) 695-8143.

New Medical Device Reduces Risk of Recurrent Strokes
In May of 2006, Northwestern Memorial became one of the first hospitals in Chicago to perform a stent procedure using the Wingspan stent, a new device designed to prevent recurring strokes caused by intracranial atherosclerotic disease or the narrowing of blood vessels in and around the brain. A recent Lifetime of Health article focused on one of the patients Dr. Bernard Bendok treated with this stent and his dramatic recovery from intracranial artery blockage.

Familial Aneurysm Study Featured on WFRV's CBS News
Dr. Bernard Bendok was interviewed on WFRV's CBS News for a recent segment on Northwestern Memorial’s participation in one of the world’s largest aneurysm research studies. Sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, the Familial Intracranial Aneurysm (FIA) Study is a collaborative research effort involving 23 centers throughout the world and seeks to identify the genes that cause the development and rupture of brain aneurysms.

Research Trial Led by Dr. Robert Levy May Help Stroke Patients Regain Arm and Hand Function
Dr. Robert Levy is the principal investigator of a clinical research trial studying the use of cortical stimulation in patients who have suffered strokes.  This research trial was featured in the summer issue of Lifetime of Health and is currently enrolling patients.

Dr. Stephen Ondra and Dr. Aruna Ganju use high-tech motion lab in search for best treatments for back pain
Neurosurgeons at Northwestern Memorial Hospital are using a high-tech tool to help them assess treatment of spinal surgery patients and hopefully learn more about the mechanics of back pain. Stephen Ondra, MD, and Aruna Ganju, MD, both have patients analyzed at the VA Chicago Motion Analysis Research Laboratory, which uses the same technology responsible for movie special-effects and video games.
