Editors for the influential ranking reviewed 4,861 hospitals in 16 different clinical areas. At 11, it is the highest-rated neurology and neurosurgery program of any Illinois hospital.

In May of 2006, Northwestern Memorial became one of the first hospitals in Chicago to perform a stent procedure using the Wingspan stent, a new device designed to prevent recurring strokes caused by intracranial atherosclerotic disease or the narrowing of blood vessels in and around the brain.
