St Clair St., Suite 2210 Chicago, IL 60611 Fax: 312-695-0225 OverviewThe Endovascular Surgical Neuroradiology/ Neurointerventional Surgery fellowship is designed to provide an organized, supervised, full time educational experience in this subspecialty area, focusing on the management of patients with neurological disease, the performance of neurointerventional surgery procedures and the integration of these procedures therapy into the clinical management of patients.DetailsThe Endovascular Surgical Neuroradiology training program at Northwestern University’s McGaw is a one year program based at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. An additional 12 months of more advanced training can be added depending on fellow goals and needs. Fellows may also participate in surgical cases at Children’s Memorial Hospital on occasion. This fellowship program will provide a broad educational experience in endovascular surgical techniques and therapies which will prepare the fellow to function as an independent subspecialist capable of providing comprehensive patient care in this area. This fellowship can be linked to a cerebrovascular skull base fellowship or a neuroradiology fellowship depending on the gaols of the applicant and background. Interest in this should be clearly communicated during the application process. Fellows will be exposed to a comprehensive program that will integrate with specialists in neurosurgery, vascular neurology, radiation oncology, anesthesiology, critical care, emergency medicine and others. Exposure to these various disciplines will occur in the ambulatory care environment, inpatient setting, the emergency Room, the endovascular suite, the diagnostic neuroradiology department, Gamma Knife unit, and the rehabilitation service. Research exposure is required and is delineated below. The neurointerventional faculty include:Bernard R. Bendok, MDSameer Ansari, MDAli Shaibani, MDJeffrey Miller, MDMichael Hurley, MDEach faculty member demonstrates a strong interest in the education of fellows, sound clinical and teaching abilities, supports the goals and objectives of the program, and participates in scholarly activities.StructureDuring the one or two year fellowship, the fellow will spend 1 day a week in the outpatient clinic, one day doing academic work and three days performing neurointerventional proceures. ResearchResearch opportunities are plentiful in the departments of neurosurgery and radiology and strong mentorship is provided. Research objectives will crafted by the program director, mentor(s) and fellow based on fellow interests and goals. ConferencesIn addition to daily rounds with the attending faculty, a detailed didactic program exists for the educational advantage of the Endovascular Surgical Neuroradiology Fellow. Current didactic conferences relative to the fellowship include:Monday 7am Stroke multidisciplinary conference (monthly)Wednesday 12 pm Critical care Journal Club (monthly)Wednesday 5pm Cerebrovascular Clinical Conference (multidisciplinary)Friday 7:30am Neurooncology confeneceOther required conferences include: Neurosurgery Academic Day, Neurosurgery Morbidity/Mortality and quarterly ESN Morbidity/Mortality. Admission PrerequisitesApplicants for the Endovascular Surgical Neuroradiology fellowship must have completed or in the process of completing an ACGME-accredited residency in neurological surgery, or radiology, or its international equivalent. Under certain circumstances, a candidate for this fellowship might be at the PGY5 or PGY6 level. These “internal fellows” will be utilizing elective or research rotations during their core residency to achieve subspecialty training in cerebrovascular disease. The Director of the Fellowship is responsible for ascertaining that each applicant has completed the appropriate prerequisite training.Application RequirementsApplications for the fellowship will be accepted through October 1st for the upcoming fellowship year beginning on July 1st.
