Overview

The Endovascular Surgical Neuroradiology/ Neurointerventional Surgery  fellowship is designed to provide an organized, supervised, full time educational experience in this subspecialty area, focusing on the management of patients with neurological disease, the performance of neurointerventional surgery  procedures and the integration of these procedures therapy into the clinical management of patients.

Details

The  Endovascular Surgical Neuroradiology  training program at Northwestern University’s McGaw  is a one year program based at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.   An additional 12 months of more advanced training can be added depending on fellow goals and needs.  Fellows may also participate in surgical cases at Children’s Memorial Hospital on occasion.

This fellowship program will provide a broad educational experience in endovascular surgical techniques and therapies which will prepare the fellow to function as an independent subspecialist capable of providing comprehensive patient care in this area.

This fellowship can be linked to a cerebrovascular skull base fellowship or a neuroradiology fellowship depending on the gaols of the applicant and background.  Interest in this should be clearly communicated during the application process.

Fellows will be exposed to a comprehensive program that will integrate with specialists in neurosurgery, vascular neurology, radiation oncology,  anesthesiology, critical care, emergency medicine and others.  Exposure to these various disciplines will occur in the ambulatory care environment, inpatient setting, the emergency Room, the endovascular suite, the diagnostic neuroradiology department, Gamma Knife unit, and the rehabilitation service.  Research exposure is required and is delineated below.

The neurointerventional faculty include:

Bernard R. Bendok, MD

Sameer Ansari, MD

Ali Shaibani, MD

Jeffrey Miller, MD

Michael Hurley, MD

Each faculty member demonstrates a strong interest in the education of fellows, sound clinical and teaching abilities, supports the goals and objectives of the program, and participates in scholarly activities.

Structure

During the one or two year fellowship, the fellow will spend 1 day a week  in the outpatient clinic, one day doing academic work and three days performing neurointerventional proceures.

Research

Research opportunities are plentiful in the departments of neurosurgery and radiology and strong mentorship is provided.  Research objectives will crafted by the program director, mentor(s) and fellow based on fellow interests and goals.
