Lin
Artist: Simon Lin (faculty member)
Title of work: The Bountiful Fullness from Empty
Medium: Acrylic on canvas
Artist's comments: Your stomach was full, but it is going to be empty soon; your mind was blank, but it is filled now. From a Taoist or Buddhist point of view, full and empty are exactly the same concept. Life is a dynamic of ins and outs. Contrasting colors are used in concordance with complementing space to illustrate two ideograms, "Kong" (empty) and "You" (full), which are in both Chinese character sets and Japanese kanzi sets. I experimented with acrylic and canvas to introduce Chinese calligraphy strokes in the negative space, which is usually ignored in Zen art.
