Welcome to the Northwestern Medical Women Faculty Organization (WFO) website of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine (FSM). The WFO brings together FSM women faculty interested in fostering a supportive environment, creating opportunities for networking and recognizing significant accomplishments among FSM women faculty. The mission of WFO is to promote the career development of women faculty at all ranks and to nurture a welcoming, supportive community locally and beyond. In conjunction with our mission we organize a range of networking, mentoring, and educational opportunities.
Historically, the WFO initiated and now supports the annual FSM Lewis Landsberg Research Day by awarding prizes to the best abstracts in women’s health research. In 2017, we were honored to award the inaugural Paula H. Stern Award for Outstanding Women in Science and Medicine here at FSM, established by the generosity of the Department of Pharmacology. We look forward to selecting the next recipient in the Spring. Early on in the history of the WFO, the WFO launched and awarded annually the Distinguished Woman in Medicine and Science (DWMS) Award and Lecture Series, recognizing outstanding achievements by women in the health and medical science and research fields both nationally and locally. Given the Paula Stern Award, which honors distinguished FSM women faculty, the DWMS award is being reviewed to assure that it continues to have relevance scientifically and to augment the mentoring opportunities available here at NUFSM, to the benefit of the entire medical community.
WFO partners with FSM medical students in the local chapter of the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) by hosting student and faculty “Networking Teas” and facilitating one-on-one mentoring opportunities for interested faculty and benefitting from having student representation on our monthly WFO Steering Committee meetings. By partnering with and participating in other organizations focused on promoting women and diverse populations at Northwestern including the Provost’s Advisory Council on Women Faculty, Women’s Health Research Institute, Northwestern University Women’s Center, and the Organization of Women Faculty (on the Evanston campus), the WFO helps assure that Women faculty at FSM benefit from all that Northwestern is doing to promote and nurture women faculty.
We welcome all FSM Women Faculty to participate in the WFO and its activities, and to attend in person or remotely by phone, the WFO Steering Committee meetings which are typically held at 4:00 P.M. on the first Thursday of each month in the Robert H. Lurie Research Building, Lurie 10-123, Women's Health Research Institute Conference Room. In light of COVID restrictions, meetings are currently being held at the scheduled time via ZOOM.
