CCH awards COVID-19 Grants to 28 Local Organizations

The Center for Community Health (CCH) and Center for Food Allergy and Asthma Research (CFAAR) at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine awards COVID-19 Response and Recovery Grants to 28 local organizations.

"Our goal was to rapidly deploy resources to community-based organizations that are supporting people and communities most affected by the coronavirus crisis. Community based organizations are facing surging social, economic, and health needs, in the short- and long-term, and these flexible grants will help community partners deliver social and behavioral services, and provide people with housing, food, and emergency assistance."

CCH and CFAAR collaborated with the Northwestern University Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (NUCATS), the Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics, and Northwestern Memorial Hospital (NMH) to support 28 grantees that are providing critical services in many low- and moderate-income areas of Chicagoland that have been severely impacted by COVID-19. For example, the Northwest Side Housing Center is remotely providing housing assistance to the Belmont Cragin community, the  Greater Chicago Food Depository is providing PPE and foods to food pantries in Black churches, and the Syrian Community Network is providing emergency cash assistance to refugees, many of whom are gig-workers.

"All the funded organizations have long-standing, deep relationships with communities that experience health disparities. Evidence shows that mobilizing community safety-nets improves community health and long-term recovery during disasters."

"From the high number of applications we received, it is amazing how rapidly community organizations adapted and mobilized to meet the tremendous needs in Illinois' communities. CCH, CFAAR, and their collaborators are committed to sustaining community organizations who best understand the needs and experiences of communities that are experiencing inequities magnified by this pandemic."
