Reinvigorating the Bedside Clinical Encounter

The Center for Bedside Medicine, in association with the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and the Society of Bedside Medicine, is proud to host the First Annual Conference in Bedside Medicine. The conference is on November 14 - 15, 2025 in Chicago, IL. Conference attendees receive a free 1-year membership to the Society of Bedside Medicine, valued at $100.

Andrew Elder, MD

In the Bag

Andrew Elder is a consultant geriatrician and Honorary Professor at Edinburgh Medical School. He is the first geriatrician to serve as president of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. A recognized expert in bedside clinical skills, he has taught and assessed learners in over twenty countries and has help visiting professorships at institutions including Stanford University, Johns Hopkins, and Washington University in St. Louis. He is a former Medical Director of MRCP (UK) and believes that compassion, communication, and core clinical skills are essential to high-quality patient care.

Why You Should Read to Your Children and Examine Your Patients

Abraham Verghese is a renowned physician, author, and educator, currently serving as the Linda R. Meier and Joan F. Lane Provostial Professor in the Department of Medicine at the Stanford School of Medicine. He leads the PRESENCE center at Stanford. Dr. Verghese's work sits at the intersections of medical practice, humanism, andnarrative, setting a higher bar for patient-centered care. In addition to two memoirs, he is the author of two acclaimed and bestselling novels, “Cutting for Stone” and “The Covenant of Water.” In 2016, President Obama awarded him the National Humanities Medal; he is also the recipient of numerous honorary degrees. He is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy as well as the American Association of Arts & Sciences. His dedication to patient care and his promotion of bedside medicine creates a meaningful dialogue in the medical field.

Physical Exam Potpurri

André Mansoor is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Oregon. As a hospitalist at Oregon's academic medical center, he works closely with residents and students. He is passionate about teaching and has developed an effective framework system for approaching common problems encountered in the field of internal medicine. Other interests include bedside procedures and physical diagnosis.

Brian T. Garibaldi, MD

Director, Center for Bedside Medicine, Northwestern University

Strategies to Reinvigorate the Bedside Encounter

Brian Garibaldi is the Charles Horace Mayo Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care at the Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine. He is the director of the Center for Bedside Medicine whose mission is to redesign the modern clinical encounter. In 2017, Brian co-founded and became the first co-president of the Society of Bedside Medicine, devoted to education, innovation and research on the role of the clinical encounter in 21st century medicine. Brian is a fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine, the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, and the American College of Physicians. He is also a member of the American Osler Society.

Rachel Eisenstadt Lipman, MD

Assistant Professor, Dermatology, Medicine (Hospital Medicine)

Learning to Look, Dermatology at the Bedside

Rachel Eisenstadt Lipman, MD is a dermatologist and internist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. She completed a combined residency in Internal Medicine and Dermatology at Northwestern University, where she served as chief resident and was a recipient of the Medical Dermatology Society mentorship award. 

Dr. Lipman enjoys practicing as an internist in the Division of Hospital Medicine and dermatologist, with a focus on inpatient consult dermatology and the longitudinal care of patients with complex, inflammatory, and autoimmune skin disease.

Courtney Reamer, MD

Instructor of Medicine

AI at the Bedside

Courtney Reamer is an Instructor of Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a recent graduate of its Clinical Informatics Fellowship. Her work focuses on developing and integrating artificial intelligence tools for medical education and clinical care, enhancing clinical decision support, and advancing quality improvement through data-driven interventions. She has built AI-powered tools for prior authorizations and is currently developing applications to support physical exam training and cancer survivorship planning. Courtney has presented her work at the American Academy of Neurology and the Society of Hospital Medicine. She also helped establish the Clinical Informatics Roundtable at Northwestern, where she has delivered several talks. She is passionate about advancing the thoughtful use of AI and informatics to improve patient care and medical training.
