Andrew Hoel, M.D. is a board certified vascular surgeon in the division of Vascular Surgery at Northwestern Medicine and an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Dr. Hoel’s clinical practice encompasses open and endovascular treatment of aortic, visceral, carotid, and lower extremity arterial disease. He has specialized training and clinical expertise in the endovascular and open surgical treatment of complex aortic disease including treatment of aortic aneurysm and aortic dissection. His practice philosophy is based on active collaboration with patients to find the best treatment strategy of a patient’s vascular problem, goals and values.

Dr. Hoel attended Mayo Medical School and completed a residency in general surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a Harvard Medical School teaching hospital. He joined Northwestern after completing a vascular surgery fellowship at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. As a member of the Northwestern Faculty he is involved in the education and training of medical students, residents and fellows. He is a recipient of teaching awards, is the Clerkship Director for medical student rotations, and is the moderator for the Division of Vascular Surgery Quality Improvement Teaching Conference and Aortic Procedure Planning Conference.

With an emphasis in outcomes and health services research, Dr. Hoel has an active research enterprise focused on reducing the risk of vascular procedures and selection of the optimal treatment strategy. He is actively involved in the research and quality improvement endeavors of the Society for Vascular Surgery Vascular Quality Initiative both at the national and regional levels. He is the site principal investigator of multiple clinical trials and education studies focused on minimally-invasive treatment of vascular disease and on patient-physician communication. He has published and presented his research widely and has mentored multiple trainees through original investigations.

As the Director of Surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Dr. Hoel collaborates with nursing, anesthesia and administrative leadership do deliver exceptional care to all patients undergoing surgery at Northwestern. This includes operations and quality oversight for 60 operating rooms in which over 35,000 procedures are performed annually. He additionally is a member of multiple hospital committees focused on quality, safety and value for patients treated at Northwestern.

Dr. Hoel strives for excellence in the treatment of high acuity patients with severe vascular disease and is committed to fostering innovative and exceptional care for all Northwestern patients.[Shorten text]
