Dr. Amy Kontrick, Director of Student Education, serves as faculty advisor for the medical school-sponsored Emergency Medicine Interest Group. The group not only provides students early exposure to emergency medicine but also offers clinical experience and mentoring. The group sponsors a monthly lunchtime lecture series featuring various emergency medicine faculty members. These conferences are aimed at first and second-year students with the goal of exposing them to various aspect of emergency medical care. In addition, the group sponsors evening workshops featuring topics such as suturing, radiology, and an airway lab. The first and second-year students are also provided an opportunity to shadow a physician in the ED during their pre-clinical years, which provides valuable clinical experiences in the specialty early in their careers. The Emergency Medicine Interest Group also strives to encourage student interest and involvement in emergency medicine research by increasing awareness of current projects and providing appropriate mentors for students with original research ideas.
