Neonatal Resuscitation Program

The Northwestern Perinatal Center is committed to the support of institution-based Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) courses within the Perinatal Network. NRP Instructor Courses are offered with no course fee (for Network hospital staff) once or twice each year, as needed, to maintain a base of instructors at each institution. Recognizing there may be situations when an institution is unable to meet the need for certification of staff, the Perinatal Center also offers several NRP Provider Courses throughout the year.

Course Registration Information
As each program has a maximum number of participants, early registration is encouraged. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis, and classes fill quickly. Please use the Northwestern Perinatal Center registration form. You may e-mail, fax, or mail the form to the Perinatal Center. Telephone registrations are not accepted. If course fees are required, your registration form and check should be mailed to the Perinatal Center. If your employer is paying your course fees, this must be indicated on the registration form with the appropriate contact name. The registration deadline is two weeks before each course date, unless otherwise stated. We reserve the right to cancel a course if there is insufficient registration.

Refund Policy
Full fees will be refunded if notice of cancellation is received two weeks prior to class, or if the program is cancelled by the Perinatal Center. No refunds will be provided for cancellations made less than two weeks prior to class. However, if the cancellation occurs at least 24 hours prior to class, fees may be applied toward a new class. No refunds or application of fees will be provided for “no shows” or cancellations made less than 24 hours prior to class.

Receipts
Receipts are available upon request to the Perinatal Center.

Course Confirmation
Confirmation by fax or e-mail is sent once registration is complete. Contact the Perinatal Center at (312) 472-3780 to verify registration if no confirmation has been received.

NRP Provider Courses

The NRP Provider Courses offered are for those students needing/wanting the entire NRP Provider Course for the first time. Recertifications cannot be accommodated at these courses due to faculty, time, and space issues. Discuss recertification options with your manager/institution-based NRP instructors. Course participants must study for the NRP Provider Course using the most current NRP Provider Manual/CD-ROM. Although you may be experienced in the provision of neonatal care and resuscitation, passing the course requires familiarity with the ideas and verbiage of the Neonatal Resuscitation Program, so these materials must be studied. In preparation for the course, read all course materials and take all post-tests in the provider manual/CD-ROM. We are using the 5th edition "Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation" - New as of Fall 2006.

Participants have two chances to take each of the nine tests. Retesting will be done at the end of the course, not during breaks or lunch. Each lesson builds on the information in the previous lessons. For that reason, if a student is unable to pass three out of the nine lessons on the first try, the student will be asked to leave the course. To complete the course, two options are available following further study.

 1) With your place of employment, you may arrange to complete the outstanding testing with an institution-based instructor. Upon request to the course coordinator, results of successfully completed written tests/performance checklists will be forwarded to the institution-based instructor to complete course requirements. Please note that NRP guidelines stipulate that all course work must be completed within 30 days. (If it is more than 30 days between the initial testing and the final testing, all testing must be repeated.)

2)  With the Perinatal Center, you may register for another NRP Provider Course. (Note that full fees will be charged.)

Psychomotor skills are also evaluated in the course (performance checklists). If students are unable to demonstrate both knowledge and skill in the completion of performance check lists, they will need to practice and return to another class. Returning for a full day of class or just part of one will be at the discretion of the NRP faculty.

NRP Instructor Courses

The NRP Instructor Course can only be taken by those who are currently NRP providers and who have the recommendation of a work supervisor. Instructor candidates must submit a legible copy of both sides of their current NRP card with their registration. The card must indicate the successful completion of all lessons in the NRP. Instructor candidates must also submit a letter of recommendation from their work supervisor with their registration form. The recommendation should support the candidate’s qualifications to become an instructor as well as document the institution’s need for an additional NRP instructor.

Upon arriving at the NRP Instructor Course, all candidates will be required to take all nine of the NRP written tests and successfully complete them the first time. In other words, there is no retesting for people who want to teach this course. Candidates will then need to demonstrate the ability to function successfully as the team leader in a Mega-Code. After successful completion of the written tests and Mega-Code, the didactic portion of the Instructor Course will begin. The instructor manual for the course can be purchased through the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), AAP Customer Service at 888-227-1776 or go to www.aap.org/bookstore. We are using the 5th edition Instructor Manual Release Fall 2006.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Illinois Nurses Association, and accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
