Prentice Women's Hospital and Maternity Center

Prentice Women's Hospital and Maternity Center of Northwestern Memorial Hospital, located at 250 E. Superior Street in Chicago, offers a comprehensive, patient-centered program for women's and infants' health. Prentice is also the primary teaching facility for Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, providing graduate and undergraduate education in women's health care and newborn pediatric care.

The hospital has 58 postpartum and antepartum beds and 27 beds for gynecologic care. The labor-delivery-recovery (LDR) area has 20 LDR rooms with 4 operative rooms. The Prentice operative room has six suites for gynecology, breast, and plastic surgeries.The Level III Reneé Schine Crown Special Care Nursery accommodates 46 newborns and is staffed at all times by neonatologists. The nursery, which receives transports through the Northwestern Perinatal Network as well as infants born at Northwestern Memorial, provides care for up to 500 premature or seriously ill newborns each year.

Construction began in 2004 on the new Prentice Women's Hospital, and was completed in the fall of 2007. The new facility, located on the northwest corner of Superior Street and Fairbanks Court, consist of nearly one million square feet of space for state-of-the-art care for women and infants, as well as teaching and conference facilities.

Prentice offers obstetrics and gynecologic ultrasound, colposcopy, genetic counseling, in vitro fertilization, and a developmental evaluation clinic for the follow-up of high-risk newborns. The Lynn Sage Comprehensive Breast Center specializes in the care of women with breast disease, providing complete breast imaging, surgical consultation and follow-up, radiation oncology, medical oncology consultation, a patient education center, access to national research studies, psychological support, and rehabilitative services. The Prentice Ambulatory Care (PAC) Clinic is an outpatient facility with general obstetric and gynecologic and specialty clinics devoted to the care of high-risk patients.

Prentice's community presence is maintained by affiliations with the Winfield-Moody Health Center and the Erie Health Center. A continuing series of patient education programs is available to the public, and Prentice also houses the Alberto-Culver Women's Health Center, a well-stocked health information resource center with a broad range of books, videotapes, and other materials for patient and professional use. Prentice has achieved local and national recognition for outstanding nursing care through presentations by Prentice nurses at the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric, Neonatal Nursing (AWHONN) National Conference and at local and state meetings.
