Dr. Thompson has strong interests in the areas of quality improvement, patient satisfaction, medical documentation/coding, clinical informatics, software design, natural language processing, and telehealth. He has served as both chair and/or member of hospital-based and national quality assurance committees. He has served as both chair and/or member of hospital-based and national quality assurance committees. He has developed databases and educational tools to promote benchmarking and quality improvement for emergency departments and medical call centers. Working in collaboration with nationally-known pediatrician Dr. Barton Schmitt, Dr. Thompson has authored a comprehensive set of telephone triage protocols for use in medical call centers and physician offices. He performed research in the area of natural language processing of the patients' reason for visit (chief complaint) and developed a taxonomy of Coded Chief Complaints.[Shorten text]
