Welcome to the Department of Emergency Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Congratulations to Dr. Amer Aldeen on the publication of the second edition of his book, “Questions to help you pass the EM boards”
Congratulations to EM Department Chair Dr. James Adams and EM Department Administrator, Brian Spector, MPA, who planned this year’s AACEM/AAAEM national meeting in Washington, DC on April 2-4th. This year’s conference brought together over 130 EM chairs and their administrators from across the country to discuss current issues facing the specialty, network, participate in workshops on leadership, and hear from leaders at the national level, including AHRQ, NHLBI, ABEM, AAMC, and MGMA.
Congratulations to Katherine Torres, executive assistant to the chair, and Arthur knight, assistant to the vice chair, DA and faculty affairs resource coordinator, whose administrative support was instrumental in the months leading up to the conference, as well as staffing of the event a huge success. Congratulations to Dr. Usha Periyanayagam, who has been selected as a participant in the Yale/Stanford Johnson & Johnson Global Health Scholars Program. She will travel to Indonesia to complete a clinical rotation at Alam Sehat Lestari in Sukadana, West Kalimantan, Borneo. You can find more details about the program, here.
Submission deadlines are fast approaching for the Global Health Council's 39th annual Global Health Conference, You can find more details, including links to the Global Health Council's web site, here.

In celebration of EM Resident Appreciation Day 2012, the faculty of Northwestern Emergency Medicine Residency gifted each resident with a custom fleece-lined jacked. We celebrated Resident Appreciation Day a little early, on February 29th, so that the residents have a treat to look forward to on the morning of the ABEM In-Training Exam.

Dr. Rahul Khare has returned from his third volunteer trip to Haiti, where he gave lectures on Emergency Medicine and worked side by side with Haitian doctors at the Justinian University Hospital in Cap Haitian. Congratulations to Dr. Usha Periyanayagam, who just took first place, and three thousand dollars in prize money, in the Resident Research Competition at the AAEM Scientific Assembly in San Diego! Usha expertly presenter her project, "Predictors of Assault in Female Trauma Patients in Illinois", fielding numerous questions with oustanding detail and great poise. She really did a wonderful job.
Rahul Khare, MD, emergency medicine, was interviewed live on FOX Chicago regarding cold weather safety. Khare comments that minor injuries such as bumps, bruises and sprains and sprains from slips and falls, as well as major injuries, such as hypothermia, are all very common this time of year and offers tips on how to stay out of the emergency department this winter.

Congratulation to the members of our faculty and staff who will be publishing Patient Input into the Development and Enhancement of Emergency Department Discharge Instructions: a Focus Group Study in the Journal of Emergency Medicine. Contributing authors include James Adams, MD, Barb Buckley, RN, Kirsten Engel, Md, Victoria Forth, MA, Danielle McCarthy, MD, Michael Schmidt, MD, and PAula Tenabe, PhD, MPH, RN.

Congratulations to Peter Pang, M.D, who was recently selcted to recieve a KL2 Award, begining in the summer of 2012. This is an NIH award through the Northwestern University Clinical and Translational Science Institute (NUCATS). Peter will be part of the Multridisciplinary Clinical and Translational SCientist (MCTS) Scholars program.You can read more about the MCTS and NUCATS here.
Congratulations to Brian Patterson, who has published his MPH thesis in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine. You can read the article, titled "Cost-effectiveness of Influenza Vaccination of Older Adults in the ED, here.
Congratulations to Barbara Buckley, who recieved the 2011 Annual ENA Conference Poster Award for Research while representing our department's Davee research team at this year's Emergency Nurses' Association conference in Tampla, Florida.

Congratulations to Department Chair Dr. James Adams, who received the Hal Jayne Educational Excellence Award! This prestigious award is presented to a memeber of Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) who has made outstanding contributions to emergency medicine through the teaching of others and improving knowledge about the teaching of learners. Congratulations to Dr. Usha Periyanayagam, who has been awarded the TeamHealth INDUS Grant for Global Emergency Medical Sciences! Usha will travel to India with Dr. Mamta Swaroop from the Division of Trauma Surgery as part of the grant and its related educational and research programs. Dr. Swaroop and Dr. Marie Crandall have been wonderful mentors for Usha on the project that earned her this award: Racial Disparities in Trauma in the United States. Thanks and congratulations to each of them.
Congratulations to resident Kori Sauser (NUEM 2012) who was recently selected for the extremely competitive Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars program! She will be pursuing her research training after Northwestern at the University of Michigan.
