Welcome Drs. Henri Acosta, who trained at U. of Colorado, Luke Theilken at Mass Gen and U. of Chicago, Rena Beckerly and Daniel Fagin at Brigham & Women's Hospital, Kenyon Duncan at SUNY Downstate- Brooklyn, and Rohit Rahangdale at George Washington U. along with Drs. Anjali Panjwani, John BebawyChristian Altman, and Kinjal Patel who all trained at Northwestern U.

Through the State of Illinois' Excellence in Academic Medicine Program, Northwestern Memorial Hospital awarded $214,000 to Dr. Christine Park and $150,000 to Dr. Robert Gould for their simulation training projects.

The Department is pleased to announce the creation of two new fellowships: Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology, which will be directed by Saadia Sherwani, MD, and Neurosurgical Anesthesiology, which will be directed by Antoun Koht, MD. Information about these fellowships will soon be posted to the website.

The Resident Jeopardy Team of Drs. Tamim Wafa,  Naveen Nathan, and Andrew Baudo at the Midwest Anesthesia Conference impressively advanced through all three rounds of the four-hour tournament to finish third place overall. They finished ahead of Illinois Masonic, University of Chicago, Rush, University of Michigan, UIC, Ohio State, Metro Health Medical Center, Wayne State, and Thomas Jefferson University.  The only teams to finish ahead of them were Loyola and Baylor.  All three members should be congratulated for representing Northwestern so well.

Congratulations to Alan Bielsky, MD, CA-1 resident, who has been appointed Chairman Elect to the Resident Section of SAMBA. Dr. Bielsky's responsibilities include promoting the society to residents and arranging events for SAMBA meetings.

Due to the RRC's highly favorable review of the residency program, ACGME has approved an increase in resident complement. The department will, in turn, be able to provide more residents with an excellent educational experience in the growing Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit of Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Congratulations to CA-2 resident, Amit Darnule, MD, who will participate in Operation Walk with Ling Qun Hu, MD. Drs. Darnule and Hu will provide much-needed hip and knee replacements to impoverished citizens of ChengDu, China this fall.

Dr. Honorio Benzon has been elected President of the American Association of Pain Directors (AAPD) for the period of 2005-2007. The AAPD is comprised of the Directors of all Pain Medicine fellowship programs in the country.

The Residency Review Committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education awarded the Department of Anesthesiology's Residency Program and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program at Northwestern University its five-year accreditation, the best accreditation a program can receive.

Congratulations to Paloma Toledo, MD, who was selected as President-Elect for the ASA Resident Section.The current president and the president-elect reside over the governing council of the resident component. They are the liason between the ASA and the resident component and thus attend the ASA board of directors meetings. Paloma's duties will also include encouraging resident participation in the ASA; developing experience among young physician leaders; and improving resident awareness of the ASA's role in the evolution of the specialty of anesthesiology.

At the American Medical Association meeting in June, Dr. Kataria, Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology, received the AMA Foundation’s Leadership Award, which provides special training to recipients to develop skills as future leaders in organized medicine. In addition, she was elected alternate delegate to the governing council of the AMA Young Physicians Section.

Congratulations to Drs. Nicole Higgins, Tamim Wafa, and Benjamin Newell for receiving three out of the five available SAMBA Travel Awards to attend the Society of Ambulatory Anesthesia annual meeting. Each award is worth $1000. In addition, all three residents received a SAMBA White Mountain Institute Award ranging from $200-500.

Contrary to previous research, spinal-epidural analgesia given early in labor (cervical dilation of less than four centimeters) does not increase rates of Cesarean section, according to Cynthia A. Wong, MD, and her colleagues. This landmark study appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine.

According to a study published in The Journal of Neuroscience, lead investigator  A. Vania Apkarian, PhDand his Feinberg School of Medicine colleagues report that chronic back pain shrinks the brain by up to 11 percent- equivalent to the amount of gray matter lost in 10-20 years of aging.
