  • Paloma Toledo, MD, MPH, selected as new Board of Directors Chair for FAER

    Paloma Toledo, MD, MPH, has been selected as the new Board of Directors Chair for the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER).
  • Greg Booth, MD, receives first annual Lawrence A. and Ellen S. Wilson Award for innovation in education

    Dr. Lawrence Wilson was a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy from 1956-1965 and on active duty from 1956-1958. He went to medical school at Dartmouth Medical College and Case Western Reserve. He completed a surgery residency from 1958-1961 at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in New Hampshire and Vermont and an anesthesiology residency from 1961-1965 at University Hospitals of Cleveland.  Dr. Wilson joined the Northwestern faculty in 1967. For many years, Larry ran the OR schedule, where he quickly became affectionately known as “Coach”. Larry worked his entire professional career at Northwestern and retired in 1994.

    In celebration of her husband Larry’s tenure and contributions to the Department, Ellen provided a substantial gift to Northwestern University last October. In turn, the “Dr. Lawrence A. and Ellen S. Wilson Award” was created. The Award will be given to residents who support patient-oriented research and/or advance clinical innovation and education. Larry Wilson’s wife, Helen, bestowed the first annual award to Chief Resident, Gregory Booth, MD.

    The Feinberg Academy of Medical Educators (FAME) was founded in 2010 to support the educational mission of the medical school by recognizing outstanding faculty educators.
    FAME members are among the most outstanding and engaged medical educators at Northwestern University. They are teachers, leaders, researchers, scholars and mentors who represent a wide variety of disciplines, departments and career stages.
    FAME members are expected to contribute their time and talent in service of the medical school. Faculty Louanne Carabini, MD, Geeta Nagpal, MD, and Ljuba Stojiljkovic, MD, receive honor to become members of FAME.

As a member of Association of University Anesthesiologists, they are among a select group of individuals recognized by their peers to have made distinguished contributions to anesthesiology, teaching and/or research.
  • Resident Amanda Knutson, MD, PhD receives Eckenhoff Research Award

    CA-2 Resident Amanda Knutson, MD, PhD, receives the 2017 James E. Eckenhoff Research Award to support her proposal entitled "Spatial Orientation and Fiberoptic Intubation Skills in the Novice: A Randomized Controlled Trial". Dr. Eckeknhoff endowed the Eckenhoff Resident Research Award to encourage and reward residents who publish their clinical research.
  • Ljuba Stojiljkovic, MD and Meltem Yilmaz, MD to direct Simulation Laboratory

    Ljuba Stojiljkovic, MD, PhD, was promoted to the position of Director of the Simulation Laboratory for the Department of Anesthesiology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.  Dr. Stojiljkovic had served the role of Co-Director of the Simulation Laboratory for many years developing an extensive portfolio in the area of medical simulation.  We are fortunate to have someone with her experience to oversee this important mission of the Department.Meltem Yilmaz, MD, will now serve as the Co-Director of the Simulation Laboratory.   Dr. Yilmaz has been active in the Simulation Laboratory serving as a MOCA instructor and in other roles with resident education.
  • 14 Faculty receive teaching awards at Grand Rounds

    Three faculty received Golden Apple Teaching Awards at the June 9 graduation dinner: Bruno DeCaria, MD, from the CA-1 class, Jason Farrer, MD, from the CA-2 class, and Jeremy Deer, MD, from the CA-3 class. Alexander DeLeon, MD, was awarded the Most Outstanding Educator from the entire residency class. At the June 9 Department Grand Rounds, the chief residents also recognized 10 faculty  with framed certificates for their excellent teaching contributitions: Naveen Nathan, MD, Mahesh Vaidyanathan, MD, Louanne Carabini, MD, Dost Khan, MD, Adam Kretzer, MD, Daniel Winter, MD, Ryan Hood, MD, Adrian Pichurko, MD, Abbas Al-Qamari, MD, and Aaron Reynolds, MD.

  • Residents are honored with Quality Improvement Awards at graduation dinner

    In order to recognize residents for their contribution to Quality Improvement at Northwestern Medicine, the Department created a new award to present at the graduation dinners. For the first year, three projects involving five graduating residents received awards: Andrew Gostine, MD, Anthony Longhini, MD, Josephine Tracy, MD, Anameti Usoro, MD, and Ryan Zaglama, MD.

    As a result of his FAER research fellowship, Resident Adithya Bhat, MD, publishes research on "High-sensitivity Cardiac Troponin Elevation after Electroconvulsive Therapy: A Prospective, Observational Cohort Study" in April's edition of Anesthesiology.
  • Faculty and resident receive awards and honors at SOAP meeting

    At the recent annual SOAP meeting in Seattle, WA, faculty Elizabeth Lange, MD, received Best Paper Award-2nd Place for her research on "Association Between Bolus Rate and Duration of Adequate Labor Analgesia."SOAP2017Seattle Faculty Mahesh Vaidyanathan, MD, MBA and resident E. Joseph Kent, MD, received Top 15 Case Reports/Series for their research on "UltrasonographicAssessment of Uterine Contractility During Primary Cesarean Delivery." TorenSOAPDr. Vaidyanathan also received Top 15 Research Posters for his research on "Active Blood Management Practices on Labor and Delivery: Using Cost-Analysis to Evaluate Blood Product Utilization." Lastly, faculty Paloma Toledo, MD, MPH, was elected as SOAP Delegate to the ASA House of Delegates.

    As representatives of the Department of Anesthesiology, Faculty Paloma Toledo, MD, and Resident Blake Butler, MD, attended the Student National Medical Association meeting with the focus on supporting health equity and a diverse student body.ButlerSNMA The annual SNMA conference is one of the largest gatherings of underrepresented minority medical students in the country. Throughout the conference, several medical students, faculty and residents represented Northwestern Medicine and the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University in the exhibit hall to field questions from pre-med and medical students considering Northwestern. On the final day of the conference, McGaw hosted a reception to provide an additional opportunity for attendees to interact with Northwestern Medicine residents and faculty.

    Residents Anameti Usoro, MD, andJillian Kent, MD, presented their posters "Global Health Opportunities for Anesthesia Residency Websites" and "Acceptability and Preferences for Labor Analgesia in Dominican Women" at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine's Global Health Day on April 19. Their faculty mentor, Feyce Peralta, MD, received a "Distinguished Mentor" honor at the event.

  • Honorio Benzon, MD, is guest editor for November edition of Anesthesia and Analgesia

    AAcoverProfessor of Anesthesiology Honorio Benzon, MD, is guest editor for the November 2017 edition of Anesthesia and Analgesia, which focuses on the opioid crisis.Dr. Benzon wrote editorials on "Houston, We Have a Problem!: The Role of the Anesthesiologist in the Current Opioid Epidemic" and "Themed Issue on the Opioid Epidemic: What Have We Learned? Where Do We Go From Here?" In addition, Assistant Professor Hubert Benzon, MD, a pediatric anesthesiologist at Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, wrote a review article on Evidence for the Efficacy of Systematic Opioid-Sparing Analgesics in Pediatric Surgical Populations.
