My research focus has been on the development of functional outcomes for children with spinal muscular atrophy (www.smaoutcomes.org) and I have been involved in clinical trials exploring the effects of medication on strength and functional abilities for those with SMA.  Currently involved in natural history and clinical trials as a member of  Project Cure SMA.  Focus on development and validation of surrogate outcome measures for use in clinical trials for children with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Ongoing studies include:  Natural History , Multi-center Phase II Trial of Valproic Acid and Carnitine in Patients with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (CARNI-VAL Trial), Validation and Reliability of the Modified Hammersmith Functional Motor Scale in Non-Ambulatory Children with SMA. My interest in clinical outcomes and standard of care for children with SMA continues to evolve as a member of the International Coordinating Committee for SMA (ICC-SMA) and as a member of the ICC Standard of care Committee.

I am also interest in motor control issues in cerebral palsy and have participated as a member of the NIH Task Force on Children with Motor Disorders and the Cerebral Palsy Registry Project.

Currently I see pediatric patients clinically as a private practitioner and consult re: children with neuromuscular disorders.
