Giving Opportunities
Through their philanthropy and commitment, caring and generous individuals are helping us achieve our research and teaching missions each day.  Private support accelerates the pace of progress by providing the necessary resources to retain distinguished faculty, support talented students, provide needed educational equipment and materials, and spearhead new research initiatives in the Department of Physical Therapy and Human Movement Sciences.

Gifts of cash or appreciated property will make an immediate impact for our students and faculty.  Additionally, donors can use planned giving vehicles such as charitable remainder trusts, charitable gift annuities, or their estate documents to provide meaningful support.  Your tax-deductible gifts are essential to our future achievements in physical therapy and education.  We thank you in advance for your commitment to this important work.

How You Can Help
With our rich history, our exceptional faculty and staff, and our resources, Northwestern’s Department of Physical Therapy and Movement Sciences has a strong foundation for a bright future.  Now, the overall goal of our strategic plan is to become the premier research and education program in Physical Therapy and human movement sciences in the world.  This is a high ambition, but we know that it can be achieved because of the high quality of our faculty and the fact that we are already rated as one of the top ten educational programs in the nation.  We recognize that the full realization of our research and curricular potentials will be the key in achieving the very top in physical therapy research and education both nationally and internationally.  We invite philanthropic partners to join us in reaching this goal by giving to one or more of the following funding needs:

Physical Therapy Scholarship Fund
Scholarship support for students remains a critical need as the Physical Therapy program approaches its 80th anniversary.  As we aggressively recruit top students, other universities also are courting these talented individuals.  Financial concerns often become a determining factor when prospective students make decisions about the preferred school they will attend.  Gifts to the Scholarship Fund will help offset tuition expenses for DPT students and help Northwestern continue to attract the best and brightest.

Physical Therapy Gift Fund
Gifts to the Physical Therapy Gift Fund will help support the following:

Increase computers and software dedicated to student use.
Update teaching equipment that reflects current and emerging practice.
Maintain state of the art classroom furnishings and media.
Assist with cost of providing each student with necessary learning materials.
Student research - All students participate in a research project throughout the course of the curriculum, with the project developed and supervised by faculty.  The department provides modest support; however, projects often need more support than the department can provide.  Typical expenses include research supplies and small equipment, reimbursing subjects for travel and parking, preparation of posters for conference presentations, travel to professional meetings for project presentations etc.
Stipends for Student Research Assistant Interns - Opportunities exist for students to participate as Research Assistants under the direction and supervision of experiences faculty researchers.  This unique opportunity is viewed as an investment in cultivating the interests of direly needed future physical therapy researchers who can advance the scientific bases and effectiveness of clinical practice.

Physical Therapy Named Scholarship Funds
The following scholarships are currently available to Doctor of Physical Therapy students through the Department of Physical Therapy and Human Movement Sciences at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine:

Janet L. Hemzacek Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established in 1992 to honor the memory of Janet L. Hemzacek, a 1982 physical therapy graduate.  The scholarship was established by Janet’s family and is intended to recognize Northwestern University physical therapy students who demonstrate “a sense of integrity and humanity, and an involvement with the community through volunteer activity.”
Elizabeth Wood/Dorothy Voss Physical Therapy Scholarship
This fund was established in 1987 by Wendy Martin Lageschulte (NUPT 1964) and her husband to honor Elizabeth C. Wood, PT, MS, and Dorothy E. Voss, PT, for their many contributions to the physical therapy education program at Northwestern and to the profession.  Ms. Wood joined the faculty in 1950 and served as Director or Programs in Physical Therapy from 1952-1972.  Ms. Voss was a faculty member from 1963-1975 and was known internationally from her work in the area of therapeutic exercise.  The purpose of this award is to recognize students who reflect their ideals of professionalism and high standards and who demonstrate the potential for contributing significantly to the profession.
Sally C. Edelsberg Scholarship in Physical Therapy
This scholarship was established in 1999 to honor Sally C. Edelsberg, PT, MS, FAPTA, Director of Programs in Physical Therapy from 1972-1999.  During her tenure as Director, she demonstrated superior leadership in the physical therapy profession.  She is noted for her educational leadership and dedication to the goal of providing students with the opportunity for a physical therapy education at Northwestern, regardless of financial circumstances.  The scholarship is intended to recognize students who demonstrate potential.  Recipients of the scholarship are known as Edelsberg Scholars.

Planned Giving Philanthropic Opportunities
In addition to an annual gift, donors can help through the following two giving options:

Charitable Gift Annuity: life income plans
As people approach or start to think about retirement, they often wonder how they will ensure a steady income for themselves while maximizing whatever tax breaks are available.  In addition, many people think about their commitment to their favorite charities and want to continue to support causes they care about, even when forced to live on a fixed income.

Many individuals have used gift annuities to accomplish both income and philanthropic goals.  A Charitable Gift Annuity is part investment and part gift.  It can be an excellent option for donors who want to secure their own financial stability while ensuring some level of support for the Department of Physical Therapy.  An annuity can be particularly attractive to the donor who wants to receive income from assets that have risen sharply in value, such as stocks.  A charitable gift annuity can provide: supplemental income payments for your lifetime (and the lifetime of your spouse); significant tax breaks at the time of the gift and every year thereafter; and support for the Department of Physical Therapy for generations to come.

Bequests: support through your estate plans
Many individuals choose to provide support using their estate plans.  Donors can make a provision in their will or trust and make the Department of Physical Therapy a beneficiary.  Bequests can be a specific piece of property, a specific dollar amount or a percentage of the donor’s estate after all debts, taxes, expenses and other specific bequests are paid.

The support designated in a bequest can be for unrestricted support for the Department, or donors can choose to support a specific funding need, such as scholarships.  Naming opportunities are available at certain levels where donors can memorialize themselves, a loved one, or their favorite professor.
