FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

There is a great need for clinicians to develop expertise in the fields of healthcare quality and patient safety. These relatively new disciplines have emerged as central to the development of good health care and require knowledge that until now has not been included in the standard curricula. The AAMC and ACGME have established educational competencies that direct a greater concentration on the knowledge and skills in healthcare quality and patient safety.  Few faculty have received any formal training in these fields to address this educational gap in current medical education.

The Institute for Healthcare Studies at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine is a leader in healthcare quality and patient safety education and research. Northwestern University has developed a Faculty Development Program to address the need for faculty development.

The goal of this program is to provide a structured curriculum that presents the emerging content and skills clinicians need to become effective healthcare quality and patient safety thinkers, practitioners, and innovators. This program will provide a context for faculty to explore and develop the educational tools, methods and curricular approaches for integrating healthcare quality and patient safety into the medical education curricula.

The Faculty Development Program in Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety is a 12-month, part-time program designed for faculty who want to acquire in-depth knowledge in these fields and the methods required to educate students in these new and important fields.
