Improving Clinician Communication: Training Module

BACKGROUND

  • Lack of standardized communication during transitions of care is a problematic context for communication
  • Poorly structured communication can lead to risks during transitions of care
  • Joint Commission (2006) requires institutions to “implement a standardized approach to handoff communications….”

INTERVENTION: Web-based training of a standardized format for use during handoff communications

 

 

METHODS and ANALYSIS:

  • Pre and post INTERVENTION recordings of handoff communications between clinicians both by phone and face to face
  • Pre-post comparison of the use of a standardized format during the handoff communications
