| Pediatric Patient Safety
Pediatric patient safety has been an important focus of research and applied improvement projects conducted by Drs. Donna Woods and Jane Holl.
Their work has: - Advanced the understanding of the epidemiology of patient safety risk related to pediatrics;
- Developed theory to facilitate effective intervention; and
- Translated methods from other high reliability, life critical industries for risk assessment and safety improvement in medical care.
Results from the research conducted on pediatric patient safety at Northwestern University, Institute for Healthcare Studies include: - A validated set of “Child Specific Risk Factors” shown to actively contribute to patient safety risk that can be used to guide effective pediatric customization of patient safety interventions and safe pediatric medical care design.
- The Pediatric Patient Safety Taxonomy is being used to apply a standard classification to improve the knowledge that can be gleaned from pediatric safety event reports.

Research Focus Areas
Clinician to Clinician Communication – Clinician to clinician communication is a primary context for patient safety risk for pediatric patients. Several projects have explored this important safety context in order to develop and implement effective interventions addressing these risks. - Strategies for Improving Clinician Communication
- Improving Clinician Communication
- Risk Assessment of Pediatric Emergency Transfers
- Improving the Patient Safety and Reliability of Pediatric Inter-Hospital Transport in the Chicago Metropolitan Area
Risk Assessment – - Leveraging Assessments of Risk for Pediatric Patient Safety
- Pediatric Emergency Transfers

PPSC GOALS - To study and identify patient safety risks in the systems, processes, and practices of providing medical care to children.
- To design patient safety improvement interventions to address the specific risks for pediatric patients and institutions that provide medical care to children.
- To disseminate interventions, tools, and processes, adapted for use by clinicians and institutions providing medical care to children.

Our Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) funded pediatric patient safety projects have free, publicly available toolkits that can be adapted to most health care settings. The toolkits include helpful items to conduct similar research at your institution. For each project we have created toolkits containing checklists, templates, tips to improve processes, selected references and other resources. [back to top]
