The talus is the second-most fractured tarsal bone, yet is still an uncommon fracture (3-6% of all foot fractures). It contains seven distinct articulations and several important ligamentous attachments. Fractures of the talus can be divided into major and minor categories, with major being fractures through the neck or head, and minor being avulsion fractures and most fractures of one process of the body of the talus. Major fractures carry a high rate of osteonecrosis and malunion, which can have significant morbidity given the talus' pivotal role in ambulation.
